Question Tags and Drivers license

I'm moving to Wichita in less than a week. I will be living there with my boyfriend and coming from Kentucky.

Maybe this was already addressed in this forum but there were a ton of threads to read.

Do I need to change my tags and driver's license? I will be living there less than a year. My tags are not up for renewal until May 2009.

What is the best way to handle this?

From the Sedgwick County website:

Quote:
Registration of vehicles is governed by Kansas State Statute K.S.A. 8-129. If you are a resident of Sedgwick County you must register your vehicle here. The only exception to this is if you are active duty military or an undergraduate student attending college in Sedgwick County. The Sedgwick County Sheriff Department's Tag Enforcement Unit is responsible for identifying and charging individuals who are in violation of this statute. This is a misdemeanor offense. Persons convicted of this charge may be subject to a fine up to $2500.00 and may also be responsible for the payment of back taxes due to the state of Kansas and Sedgwick County.
Furthermore, it states that you must get a Kansas driver's license if you have Kansas plates.

Will you be a resident? To be honest, I've never had to deal with this issue, neither going from Kansas to another state, nor from another state to Kansas. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I'd say if you're only going to be here for a year don't bother. It would be too much of a PITA to transfer the title to Kansas only to have to transfer it back when you returned to Kentucky. Not to mention how costly this could be. You're looking at $200 to transfer the title and license it the first year here. The fee may be similar when you returned to Kentucky.

I mean legally it may be appropriate to do this but common sense tells me you should be able to get by with telling a cop you're still a resident of Kentucky if you still have an address to call home there.

As long as you don't give up your residency in KY. I don't see why you should have to do all that work. Here in NH I see people that travel between FLA and NH and they don't switch anything. Also I know people that work at hospitals that travel all over and never change their plates or license. They stay up to and even longer that a year. I wouldn't worry about anything as long as you don't give up your KY residency.

I wouldn't risk a $2500 fine. Not worth it.

You will find the following information and more on: DMV.ORG - DMV Guide - The Unofficial Guide to the DMV.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
For Kansas:
First-Time Registration

New registrations are required when:

* You buy, inherit, or are gifted a car.
* You move into the state as a permanent resident

You must title and register your car within 30 days of acquisition.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Your interest will be on the second bullet point or course. They make this statement in more than one place and it is key to what you need to know.

DMV.ORG - DMV Guide - The Unofficial Guide to the DMV

This link has all the information and more for most all states. Go there and click on the map to bring up the state of Kansas information. There is far more information than you need so plan to be there for awhile to find what you want.

New residents have 90 days to register but the key word is "New". If you are going to be here but for a short time you will be fine. There are a lot of tags from other states running around in Kansas.

Please keep in mind if your plans change and you will be here longer than your next renewal date then you must register in Kansas. You do need to make that decision within 90 days.

You could always say you're just visiting, and keep your Kentucky drivers license and tags. Make sure you renew your KY tags in May, though. I lived in Kansas for over a year before I got around to getting my drivers license, but I was lucky I didn't get caught. I had a rude awakening when some girl tapped my rear bumper at a stop light and she wanted to know if she should call the police. I told her to forget about it, remembering I still had an Illinois drivers license. If she had done any damage to my vehicle, we would have had to call the cops. I went and got my KS license that afternoon!

My question is if the OP would REALLY be a resident of Kansas. What's the criteria? How long can you 'visit' for and still claim to be a resident of another state.

Isn't there a tag enforcement unit that people can call and narc you out to? That's what would worry me, someone annoyed by my music or just generally misanthropic, ratting me out on a 1-800 number. Can anyone confirm if there is such a thing? I heard that it was in place because a lot of people who moved from Misery to Kansas kept registering their cars in Misery because it was cheaper (which I'm not sure whether it still is or not).
