To add to what Crazyma said, the entire area pretty much from the Oaklawn (I-135 & 47th St.)/Plainview (Pawnee & Oliver) area north to K-96, with I-135 on the west and Oliver/Woodlawn on the east could be considered unsafe. The exception is College Hill, with Hillside on the west, Central on the north, Edgemoore/Woodlawn on the east, and Kellogg on the south. As a general rule, the further east you go, the safer/nicer it becomes, as these areas are newer/wealthier. You eventually hit Andover, a mostly safe suburb.

My main concern as far as the area being safe is that I don't want to be robbed, stabbed, or shot when I am walking. As you said, a mall or heavy commercial area leads to several other types of crime.
Overall, it sounds like the Towne Square East area is not the worst part of the city. So, what areas should I really avoid? Could someone give me some street boundaries for those areas that are just plain dangerous?
|
The areas you should avoid are these:
1. The near NE side of town boundry roughly central on the south, 27th street on the north, I-135 (Canal) on the west and Hillside on the East. Very dangerous after dark and fairly dangerous in the day.
2. The area around 31st south and Hillside- aka Planeview- especially after dark- but probably OK in the day.
3. The neighbourhood around 47th south and K-15 and Clifton. A small neighbourhood called Oaklawn- after dark. Safe in the day and even after dark they will not hurt you but they do break into cars and houses alot over there.

I think there are Brookhollow Apartments at Central and Rock. There are studio and one bedroom apartments. There's a Dillon's supermarket right across the street at the intersection of Central and Rock. Picadilly Grill and Market is on the opposite corner. I think there's still a Gessler Drug store on that corner.
Down Rock Road north there's Borders Bookstore, Panera Bread, Genesis for a workout. Then, farther north is Bradley Fair. Or Best Buy.
South on Rock is a strip mall that includes Bicycle Peddler, Freddy's, and stuff I don't remember what all.
Another block or so south is Towne East Mall, some fast food. And another block east is Eastgate Shopping Center with Barnes and Noble, Kids R Us, Blockbuster.
East on Central takes you to the Wichita Center for the Arts.
I'd guess it's on a bus route, too.
I think Brookhollow Apartments are in a great location. Really nice neighborhoods around. And, easy access to necessities if you're wanting to be on the northeast side.

Just my preference. I think you would be okay somewhere off Rock, north of the mall.
Actually there is a small place near 8115 E Central Ave, Wichita KS 67206, (that's the dry cleaners- the apt building is back behind a little shopping center, on the SE side of Central at Rock...studios and 1 bR I think, small, but decent. Close to grocery, and could walk to the mall. Darn it! I can't think of the name !! It isn't Brookhollow...I'm sorry I can't think of it!!
This city isn't too bad comparing it to where I have lived, at least in this NE side.

Thanks to everyone for those street boundaries to give me an idea of the bad areas. I found all the streets on a map and the Plainview and Oaklawn areas too. It is sad that the area around a college campus like that of WSU is unsafe.
I also found the website for the Brookhollow Apartments. They look pretty nice. Even the studios are a decent size. No prices were listed though, so I guess I will have to call.
I'm just curious. In my original post, I mentioned that my one time in Wichita was for a road basketball game at Wichita State. We ate a Ryan's and then went to the arena. So what part of Wichita was I in? Is the arena on the WSU campus or somewhere else? Just wondering.

I assume you're talking about Ryan's Steakhouse. That restaurant is basically at K-96 and Rock Rd. If you went to an arena back then, it was either the Kansas Coliseum or Koch Arena. The Kansas Coliseum is in Valley Center (Park City likes to claim it, though), basically at I-135 and 85th St., and Koch Arena is on the WSU campus.

HEY OP....It IS Brookhollow!! I had the name mistaken with some other place. Back when the house was for sale, and we supposedly (HAH) had an offer coming in, we had looked there in case we need to move quick. They weren't very expensive, a little older. The manager acted like she wouldn't take no crap Appeared to be fairly well maintained and definitely a convienent location. If I remember right, you could get less than a yr. lease too.A plus, with the studio/1 br's, you would not have tons of kids galloping around...hopefully quieter adults
if we did ever relist and sell, that is one place I would still consider....I really want to downsize!
Good luck!!!

I am not sure then which arena it was. It was back in 2000. I remember the arena was circular in shape and seated about 11,000 people they said.

There is a distinction- WSU campus is quite safe. It is patrolled by WSU police and crimes are rare on the campus. The neighbourhoods to the east of the campus are pretty good. But the area west of the campus is a no go land- especially after dark.

That would be Henry Levitt Arena and it is on campus. I saw many concerts there as a teen in the 70s including Three Dog Night, Alice Cooper and Bob Dylan. The accustics in there were horrible for concerts but at least that was good for Bob Dylan who can't sing anyway!
