I second Table Rock. It's a nice clean lake and they have some cool cabin sites.

I suggest visiting the Ozarks or anywhere in Colorado. I visited Tulsa earlier this year and it was very fun visiting the aquarium museum. Wichita is also a nice little place to visit.

Has anyone camped at watkins mill state park? How about Harry S Truman state park? We've camped at whitehall bay. It was nice, HOT, but soo far away.

For those that want spectacular freshwater oligotrophic lakes I recommend the Brainerd Lakes region of MN. Some of the towns in the region are: Brainerd, Baxter, Crosslake, Nisswa, Merrifield, Fifty Lakes, Peqot Lakes, Breezy Point, Pine River, Emily, and East Gull Lake. The area has great walleye fishing, nice forests, many golf courses, resorts, and locally owned restaurants. The trip is mostly Interstate up I-35.

We do 3-4 "weekend trips" a year to St Louis.
If I'm going to drive 3-4 hours, there better things to do, so we typically go to St Louis for the little weekend trips. The Zoo and Science Museums are free and both top notch. The City Museum is a bit pricy, but worth every penny. I guess you can do the arch if you never have, we go there once every 5-10 years. Have some amazing Italian food in the Hill district, hit a cards or blues game, go to Magic House if you have kids or the Missouri Botanical Gardens. Tour anheuser busch (also free). Enjoy one of the most popular urban parks in the nation (Forest Park) rent a bike, go to a show etc. If you don’t have the kids, hang out in one of the many urban districts in St Louis like Soulard, Central West End, Delmar Loop, Washington Ave etc. You also have Six Flags and other places like that.
There is lots to do in StL and it’s just nice to go to a “different” city sometimes.
Another great weekend trip is Omaha. It’s not near as large, nor does it offer near as many attractions as KC or StL, it’s a great weekend getaway. They have a great Zoo (buy a family pass to KC’s zoo first so you can get a great deal on both zoos). Downtown Omaha is nice with the river walk and parks and the Old Market is an interesting area.
I’m not into it myself, but Branson is very popular, lots to do and see, amusement parks, theaters, concerts, go-carts, golf, shopping etc.
Same with the Lake of the Ozarks it’s like Branson only more water related activities and no major amusement parks.
That’s all know of, after that I would start looking at Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis and Chicago, but those trips tend to be a bit more than a weekend and more expensive.
I don’t get into driving hours to little small towns, antique shopping and stuff like that, so if that’s your thing, I guess I was no help.
