Indeed, Mike. I've lived in the area for most of my life myself and can say that Ark City is cheaper on real estate and has roughly the same population as Winfield. Winfield seems to have a 'cleaner' atmosphere for some reason. And as such, has higher property values.

There are many smaller towns in the area that are 10-15 minutes away from Rubbermaid and can be considered as places to live: Oxford (10 miles west), Udall (15 miles North and West), Burden (12 miles East and North), Dexter (17 miles East), and various smaller towns that surround Ark City and Winfield. The price just outside of Winfield's limits are high and may not be to some people's standards. Five miles or more from Winfield, they tend to be more reasonable. A word to the wise: Be wary of living in a mobile home out in the country. This is Kansas and we get nasty storms that can level a mobile home (not just tornadoes take out mobile homes).

Both Ark City and Winfield offer about the same in food, lodgings, and other commercial convienences. Industry tends to be in Winfield's favor, but only slightly. Between the two cities is an airport/industrial park filled with different businesses. G.E. is in the area, most notably.

Ark City is 60(?) miles from Wichita, the largest city in the area(pop 300,000). Winfield is 15 miles closer (est.). Ponca City (pop. 60,000) is in the opposite direction, being 35 miles from Winfield, 20 from Ark City. Either of those cities can supply what Ark City or Winfield can't.

Hope that helps you out. I'm considering coming back to Rubbermaid myself, after taking a job at another location. It's not panning out like I thought it would.

You might want to consider learning Spanish. Ark City especially has had an influx of immigrants in the last few years. You can't go anywhere in public without hearing it.

I've lived in Ark City and Winfield and they're only ten hours apart. Winfield has a four year college vs Ark's City's junior college, and is slightly more high-end with slightly higher housing. They're about the same size.

I moved from Topeka and not the schools in both towns are excellent--much better than Topeka, the people friendly. There's livestock within the city limits in Ark City now (not sure about Winfield as I don't live there now) and the roosters up and down the street are loud and the horse across the alley draws flies.

This is an older thread, but I'm from Ark City (And currently attending K-State). Both AC and Winfield are pretty good places. Winfield is a little more high end (better housing and restraunts). AC is not bad. There are some pretty low end neighborhoods, but some very nice ones as well. You get to know people fairly well. If you go to a place twice, you may be considered a regular, as people will remember you.
