It's still the Are-Kansas in Ponca City. Somewhere between Ponca and Tulsa it
magically transforms into the Arkansaw.

I'm an outsider who grew up in Missouri. So forgive me if I may come off as being offensive to the locals. But do you realize how dumb those folks would sound to outsiders if they pronounced Arkansas like that? All over the nation people pronounce it correctly. From California to New York....Florida to Washington....but a neighboring state that happens to share the second two sylables of the spelling....out of silly pride...decides to change the way it is pronounced????

In Colorado, it's pronounced Ar-kan-saw River, just like the state. Kansan's just have a chip on their shoulder Or maybe the bigger question is, why don't people in Arkansas prounounce it "Ar-Kan-zuz". That's they way it's spelled!

NO ONE I know has ever called the state Ar-Kansas. It's just the river.
This pronunciation "battle", if you will, has historical roots back when Arkansas became a state. Some Senators wanted to call it Ar-Kansas, some Arkansaw. Pronouncing it "Arkansaw" has been influenced both by the Native American and French languages. Here's a question: why isn't Kansas pronounced "Kansaw"? It's all historical. *shrugs*
EDIT: After a few google searches, I found this:
The Mavens' Word of the Day
Take a look at it. It all makes much more sense.
