Don't do it if you are thinking about western kansas---you might as well be living in hell---seriously! And yes the wind blows every day! And dirt ---forget about it! Blows......and the water is poisonous--most wells have arsenic and herbicides, pesticides etc from farmers~ and no trees here---just flat----- and no jobs really---no culture! (want to buy a farmhouse?

That guy must be in Souther Kansas because we have plenty of trees and rolling hills. Our town has great wells. our city water is well water and here I dont even have to buy my drinking water separate like everywhere else I have lived. Our water is tested frequently by the state and always passes the safety and quality tests with flying colors. Obviouse the last poster has no culture but that is not the norm in Kansas! I have lived all over the country and Kansas has been the best. I have lived in Southeast Kansas and north Central and so far they are both great!

I grew up in Paola, KS and it is a wonderful little town in Eastern KS (in my opinion way better than western, ks) It is a lot like Mayberry. There is a park square, many other parks, mature trees, old beautiful affordable homes and you would probably be so surprised at how sophisticated some of the people are. Paola has great schools (the elem and HS are fairly new) there are many opportunities for substitute teaching too. Cottonwood elementary/USD 368I live in San Diego now and I still think Paola is the greatest. It was a wonderful place to grow up. It is so affordable and beautiful too. My parents live on Lake Miola, it's a great place to walk or ride bikes. Paola is only about 20 min from KC metro but there is plenty in Paola that you only have to go to "the city" once a week or less. I think it would be a great fit for your family. the burbs of KC like olathe and overland park do not have the small town feel at all and can produce some stuck up children (in my opinion--no offense everyone else)

Clay Center
Lindsborg
Hesston
Ellsworth
Abiline
Chapman
Mcpherson is a little larger but it is a really nice town.

I agree about Paola... I live there currently and its a lovely and close-knit community. You aren't far from the KS metro area, but just about everything you need is right in town. I live in an even smaller town/area called Hillsdale which is north of Paola about 5 miles... it has probably less than 500 people and is very rural in nature. My son goes to elementary school there (they are bussed to Paola for middle and high school) and its a very small (about 20 kids per grade) but amazing school... the kids there are much closer to their teachers and each other than kids at other larger schools seem to be. I would highly recommend the small communities in Miami County (Spring Hill, Paola, Hillsdale or Louisburg - avoid Osawatomie like the plague - the schools are horrible and there is a lot of petty crime and drugs). They are close enough to commute to the suburbs for work but still have their own small town feel. I commute to Overland Park for work and it is about a 40 minute drive one way, but the money is nearly twice what I would make in Paola.

I agree that Paola seems fairly pleasant with a small historic Downtown. However, for those that like the ammenities of KC, MO and the KCI Airport it is MUCH further distance.

Did I read that you are working on getting your teacher's certification? If so, Emporia State is, I think, primarily a teacher's college, as is Pittsburg State. As GraniteStater said, though, it is a pretty long drive to the airport if you travel much.
However, I think you can do the same thing at KU. If you go that route, there are numerous little towns within commuting distance of Lawrence. Eudora, DeSoto, Tonganoxie, McClouth, Baldwin (Baker University is there), Wellsville, Lecompton to mention a few. I would go for something northeast of Lawrence, but that is just my preference.
Good luck!
