Soon, too soon, Sam Brownback will be governor of Kansas and this place will be worse than anyone - liberal or conservative - could ever have imagined. We will be awash in pseudo-christianity, pseud-science, pseudo-environmental protections. Brownback will make Bush's "Blue Skies" legislation look like a dream. Western Kansas will be filled with coal plants, schools will have evolution disclaimers in Science books, gays will constantly be looking over their shoulders afraid of losing their jobs - especially state jobs. You think Kansas is the next thing to Hell now? Let Brownback and his wingnuts get in charge, the state won't even seem like a part of the United States anymore. And, the "Right" will call that "patriotism."

Strange conservative politics was one of many reasons I left Kansas. Are you saying that Brownback IS running for governor? Hopefully, a good "qualified" candidate will run against him. Nothing is worse than a hypocritical, neo-conservative, socially conservative, and moralistic ideologue.
Kansas has done plenty of things to make outsiders feel very weary about moving there

goalie...
you want hockey and warm winters?...
how 'bout the Phoenix area?...I live here now and love it....yeah, it has a conservative rep (especially since our governor left for greener pastures in DC last month as DHS head), but any big town will have all kinds of folks....and the Coyotes have a great new arena....
you said Austin is conservative?...I'd think with UT and the capital, it'd be pretty tolerant of all kinds....don't they have that famous bumper sticker, "Keep Austin Weird"?.....

Goal I hear you. I have family in Wichita. I am thinking of moving there, my wife hates it and I do not think much of it. I have always felt that people need to be left alone to do what they want to do. Christians feel that you are free to do what you want as long as it is in line with what they think is right. I am an atheist, I do not feel that I have to keep in a closet. I am considering selling my home in a liberal town in Missouri and moving to Wichita. I like where I live but there are people here who want to out law evolution in schools also. But family is a big draw for me. I feel the need to be near people I care about. Home values are dropping there and it may make a move easer to take. I may have to drop my home price to come into line with what things are selling here for. There are a few things to do in Wichita but not much. I sat in the now extinct Dunn Brothers and there was a few girls about 18yo sitting in a bible study circle. I kept thinking that if I had a group in a atheist circle how would the Christians feel? They get offended and are very thin skinned, but we are supposed to take it all in stride.

It ain't that bad. Wichita has plenty of liberals. And will probably have plenty more once this recession kicks in.

... No. Wichitans will act true to KS form and make their own situations worse by acting against their own best interests. Case in point: Doing away with the death penalty in KS to save thousands and thousands of dollars. Kansans are against that idea because for them to exercise their God-given right to put any of the - what THREE WHOLE - death row inmates to death (maybe, after years and years of costly appeals) far surpasses money for education, childrens health and well-being, putting more cops on the streets, etc etc etc

They would tell you you were "persecuting" them.

Brownback is leaving Congress to run for KS governor - good timing for his term-limit pledge. Becoming KS governor is seen by Brownback and his neo-Fundie following as a stepping stone to the White House where he will pass "Constitutional" amendments against gays and abortion. Hopefully, the rest of the country will see the huge amount of damage he does to KS and wisely refuse to entertain the idea of him as president.

It's hard to be a liberal in a conservative state. If you don't want to move too far, but be in an area more to your liking, and cheaper than where you live, take a look at Grove, OK. It is not what you think. and its not that far from Witchita. Its almost like entering a new country.
