Moral support needed for a "liberal" traped in Wichita
My thread Everything you ever need to know about Wichita has really got me bumed out. They tread quickly became a thread about how close minded Wichita people are. While I'm glad to see the outpouring of people who are like me, the truth is that people like me are a very small percentage of Wichita residents. I need to get out of here. Conservative oppressors have sucked all the life out of me.
So the reason I am asking for support is because I am stuck here for at least 6 months until the economy turns around (maybe longer). I've looked into relocating and jobs just aren't available right now. It sucks. I sold my house and I want move but now I'm going to have to get an apartment and sign a lease and hope the economy turns around and jobs start to become available.
So send me your words of encouragement and support. I could really use it.

I'm in a similar situation. What has me bummed is that so many of the places that seem to fit with my progressive values are either in much colder climates or very expensive. Do you have a place you want to go? I'm considering Madison, Wisconsin because it's very progressive, thanks to the University of Wisconsin, and about the size of Wichita, which I like after living in Dallas and dealing with so much sprawl. The University of Wisconsin's graduate program is a draw for me, too. However, I'm not opposed to living in a large city again if it has a viable public transportation system. I really like Chicago. I've also looked at Albuquerque for its climate. It seems to be in a pretty liberal area.

Hang in there! Things will get better.
There are one or two universities there, no? Maybe you could find a class or two to take for fun and connections? (I don't know if they still do it, but it used to be you could "audit" a class and pay much less - you just didn't get academic credit for it. Can you still do that?)

Here are my places of interest.
Austin, TX
Pros: Great weather. Lots of tech jobs. Affordable cost of living.
Cons: Not much to do but drink and surrounded by conservative areas.
Las Vegas, NV (when the economy recovers)
Pros: Good jobs, hot weather, plenty of drunk white women.
Cons: No rain or grass. That is kind of important to me.
Ft Lauderdale, FL
Pros: Ocean. Lots of jobs in nearby Miami.
Cons: Crime. High cost of living. No strong hockey programs or teams.

Try New Jersey. It's a progressive's dream come true and always will be plus, there's tons of homes for sale of people trying to escape.
Many are desparate to sell and get out so you could scoop up a good deal.

I really want to live somewhere where the Winters are nice. I'm going tropical or desert. Thanks for the suggestions though.

If you can afford the foothills of California that would be my choice, I stayed in a motel there that did'nt have a heater or air conditioner.... Perfect all year around!, If you are looking for liberals in kansas you might have more luck in the small towns rather than the cities, some place that still does things "The cowboy way"

Not Denver - I need it to be warm in the winter. I will looking into New Mexico.
My other requirement is that there is a minor league hockey team and a place to play recreational hockey.

Too bad. We (Tri-Cities, WA) have everything you want but warm winters. Although our winters are far milder than Colorado's (having lived through both versions, I can attest), and milder than the surrounding area. While this area is pretty conservative on balance, its people don't get all up in your face about anything. That's considered bad form here no matter what your politics or religion are. And you could certainly find a place to get between the pipes, because hockey is rather popular here.
