Default Collegiate School - Wichita

before my family moved West, my bro and I went to Collegiate for one year in the mid 70s after the threat of busing....the school had opened in the early 60s and many local kids tried it out, apparently, but then went back to public schools...a core group stayed thru the years, though....

have been back to Wichita a couple or three times since and have driven by Collegiate to check it out....decent amount of expansion, new entrance off Webb, houses now up to the property line, the usual....

I have a lot of memories....7th grade and up had to wear ties and jackets (still true?), class size was about 15, Ballinger's ?? catered lunch in the Fine Arts building, Randall Storm ?? was the headmaster (I heard later he had a stroke??), heavy religion influence (still true?)....

the school appears to have expanded a lot...my 7th grade class had maybe a total of three classes and maybe 60 students total??.....

anybody out there remember those days?.....

I remember the school from the LATE 70's. I haven't been back that way for a long time, so I couldn't help you with any recent information. Yeah, jackets and ties,....were you there for the Friday Clash days?? That was probably a little later. Its all a distant memory now...

don't remember Friday Clash....was it Collegiate's version of getting fired up for a football game?...."Ok guys, loosen up those ties just a little and let's hear some, uh, noise.....rah, rah!"

That might have started after you left...the whole idea was to clash as much as you could...you know the 70's were full of plaids, and checkers....so pretty much everybody, or at least the cool ones..showed up as un-coordinated as possible...it was more of a revolt against the dress code than anything..we used to try to walk-in together to Friday Chapel..the look on Storms' face was usually well worth it.....Do you remember Mr. Hildrebrandt? Kuppersmith? Don't remember Coachs name, it escapes me.

don't remember those names....I remember Mr. Maple taught history, Mrs. Rauh taught English, Mr Graf taught some math, Mr Lawrence (??) taught Latin....

there was a stocky PE teacher/coach, who, I think, got caught in a sex scandal after we left....I think it was with another teacher....

there was a music/choir teacher (a guy) who seemed gay, I remember....

all this was in the 1974-75 school year......
