I have been through the Flint Hills between El Dorado and Emporia and they are unique to say the least. There is a hidden gem type of beauty that goes along with grasslands/prairie scenery. The Flint Hills are neat and it is wierd that they are stuck between the flatter in the central part of the state and the eastern areas that are agicultural but with more trees.

I think that time will be more of the essence and I may wait and visit the Flint Hills in another trip to or through Kansas in the future.

I will go on mapquest and do some research. From a distance standpoint, going the US 50-54 route is shorter in distance. Also one has to go though a number of towns that may slow one down. I-70 way is longer but one can set a car on cruise control. A lot of it will depend on weather and priorities when the time gets closer.

Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions. If you have more, feel free to add.

tripster is on a distinguished road
I have driven both Hwy 50 and I70 from Pueblo to Wichita. If the weather is bad, neither is good! We hit an ice storm on I70 once and there were 15 roll overs in 33 miles!! It was very easy to pull over and find a hotel to wait out the storm on I70! I 70 is the better road...you can do 70mph the entire route, with major cities to stop at. Hwy 50 is a truck route through Kansas and you slow down to 30 through EVERY city. You can not make good time this way. We do this trip once a year.
