I should add that Shadows isn't necessarily a sports bar, but a lot of young people go there...

I would also try Mosley Street Melodrama and Cabaret Oldtown in the Old Town district. Both places offer campy plays that draw lots of couples (and a few gay folks, too). They offer a different vibe than the other bars in the area that cater to young singles. Another option might be the Looney Bin Comedy Club at 6140 E. 21st St. Have you been to a "Final Friday" art gallery crawl yet? It can be fun, especially when the weather turns a little warmer.

Mort's Cigar bar in old town is pretty cool. You're right though Old Town in general is a meat market.

Try going to Highlands. It's located at 32nd and Rock Road. Just opened a few months ago. You can play cards and poker there. I think it's ten dollars a table. You can eat and play cards. Good way to meet people and no kids at the poker table is my guess. The West side is even more family oriented than the East side.

Last time I was there I went with some friends and my sis to a bar- think it was called Crossroads or something similar on the south side. Lots of biker types and rednecks and loud rock n roll! Drank myself silly!

Single people and people with children are not the enemy - it is possible that you are missing out on making some great new friends by not giving them a chance. We are married with dogs and do not go to church on a regular basis -- we have many friends that have kids or are single - they all need a night out at some point.
How did you meet the friends that you have all ready elsewhere? Try meeting new people at work or school, join a gym, join a book club, do city league sports, attend local sporting events...
Things to do (don't avoid Old Town, it has a lot to offer) - Mort's (where they share tables) is great, live music in the summer, staff, etc.; The Pumphouse on Second Street has a fun atmosphere; Lucky's on Douglas; The Anchor on Douglas - great beer selection, good coffee; Final Fridays, if you are at all into art; Walts and The Shadow near Central and Rock; Yia Yias, especially on the patio;...I could keep going, but do not have the kind of time at the moment.
Good luck.
