A person with out a job and fresh out of incarceration is probably not going to have the money to play the stock market, invest in a business, or buy some thing to sell on ebay. Probably buying some thing to eat or wear is at the top of the list. Many unemployed people are doubting them selves and thinking what is it about me? Its the economy. I know an individual with two college degrees who is applying for Custodian Jobs and has been turned down four times so far. (he worked himself through high school and college as a custodian) So much for falling back on your skills. With all due respect its insensitive for people with secure jobs to essentially tell an unemployed person to get out and hustle up a job in an economy like this.
The problem with having a record is the key areas that jobs are still available in are Hospitals, schools, transportation, security, and social service, unfortunately those are the types of places that prolly won't hire felons.I f I were a felon I would keep trying in Manufacturing ,warehouse, and industry, but I would go to a state or government work force office and see if they have any companies they contract with who will specifically find jobs for hardcore unemployed persons, They are sometimes called "Job Placement specialist" I knew of a manufacturing plant (now Closed ) where a significant percentage of the work force had records and were making $15.00 per hour with great benefits.
