Default First time living in kansas

Hi, me and my family are soon moving to Kansas into the Ft Riley area. I was wondering first of all if it's best to try to get on post housing or is it worth getting a place off post. Second, what would be a good area to live in. I have heard that Manhattan would probably be the best place so I'm trying to find out what areas should I stay away from as far as getting a place.

Thank you.

I would try searching this forum for: Fort Riley, Manhattan and Junction City for starters. We lived in both Manhattan and Junction City and worked on Fort Riley but it was at least 10 years ago. I would be careful about considering towns 20 or 30 miles away since if traveling the back roads in the winter can be very bad. Anything just off the highway is usually good. Prices have tripled in the area since the Big Red One came back to town so if cost is an issue, you would probably be better off on post. I am sure that someone will be able to help you better than I.

I think Manhattan would be your best bet although Junction City has alot of options and has really spruced up. Manhattan is larger (50,000) than JC (20,000) and has the college town atmosphere as Kansas State University (K-State - 23,000 students) is located there. Great for bars and cafes. A great deal of developement is and has gone on so alot of housing choices. JC housing is probably cheaper. Another choice might be Abilene (7,000) which is about 30 miles west on I70. It is a beautiful area located in the flint hills, no flat Kansas here. Hope this helps
