It is just shocking to me that so few people have any clue about where their food ocomes from or how it gets from farm to market!

I would suggest you move somewhere else..I lived in Dodge for five years and never heard any cattle complain....meat is meat thats the way people make their living by raising cattle to be eatin and not for pets...Dodge is not the town for you....it is a cowboy town that means cattle!...and a great place to live!

It sounds like Dodge is not going to be a good environment for a Liberal Arts degree. I would have thought that someone so educated would have done some homework and would have visited the area before accepting employment. Get with it, or get on. The packing houses are what props up the economy there. They most likely pay your wages directly or indirectly.

Southwest Kansas is irrigated corn, hogs, dairies, feedyards, and packing houses. That is the system. That is what fits in the cash register drawer. We are carnivores, we eat meat. Dont expect any changes unless you make them.

Oh, welcome to the real world. Just be damn thankful you have a job.

Red face are animals killed in town?

No, it is not legal to slaughter cattle within city limits. The beef packing plants are located on the outskirts of town.

So i just stumbled upon your post this morning and read the whole thing. While i enjoyed quite a few replies, was dismayed by others and laughed my butt off on some i was curious how you liked Dodge? Did you make it out to Windhorst? And did you learn that the steer at one time was in fact a bull but his family jewels kept getting stolen so they quit replacing them. I in all honesty don't expect a reply since your last post was over a year ago but like they say 'curiousity killed the cat'

"Do Dodge City meat packing plants kill the animals right there in town ???"

God, it sure smells like they do.

I drove through one time, opened the car door for a gas stop and was nearly obliterated with the smell.

The pollution from the plants almost forms their own weather too. I could have sworn as I was driving into town that they were just low-level stratus clouds but they were artificial clouds from the plants that stretched eastward for 20 miles.
