People are leaving because Kansas continues to raise TAXES, they are taxing everything but SHADE AND SPARE TIRE'S to bring money in, they just passed a bill that would require a very large increase in funding for SCHOOLS, Kansas has no way to pay for the additional required increases without hitting the residence again for more money.
The other reason is the fact that there are no REAL JOB'S in Kansas unless you enjoy flipping burgers etc - Just a great deal of Labor or Grunt jobs.
Sorry I couldn't say something nice. I grew up in Kansas and trasferred to Texas and then to 19 years in Georgia. I had an accident that FORCE me to return to Kansas and the old home place... God what a change from the other states. Your neighbors could be two blocks away and it's LONG DISTANCE if you have a limb line in your home... The PERSONAL PROPERTY IS UNREAL It is on everything!!!!!!!! even the little tin shed you put up for the lawn mower is taxed.... Again sorry I couldn't say something nice.

Kansas is like any other place in that some people LOVE IT and some people HATE IT. I think it is just depends what you want out of life. I live in southwest Kansas and there are a lot of really great things about this area...and some not so great type things. On the negative side it gets really really hot and windy here...and there isn't much water or vegetation...and it is LONG drive to get ANYWHERE. However on the plus side the people here are great. Our winters are mild...we are out of tornado alley...we have a wide variety of people from many many places...we have low humidity...very little crime...we have the most amazing thunderstorms and beautiful sunsets, sunrises, amazing skies...and life is pretty simple and safe. I was raised in north central Kansas and still have family there and when I compare all the differences, I am glad that I am raising my children here where they are exposed to other cultures on a daily basis and see how other people live and they have friends of other races. Kansas tends to be pretty "White" but in southwest Kansas we have the advantage of having a more recently immigrated population. It would be nice to be closer to "things" like concerts, major league sporting events, airports, malls...but I guess that is where a person has to decide what is important to them.

And the best thing of all about Kansas...It is the home of the KANSAS JAYHAWKS!!!

We're on the west coast, just over the Chesapeake Bay bridge, but still close enough to get that humidity from the ocean. The winters are cold. I think they say the average is 18 inches of snow a year, but it seems like we either get very little snow or blizzards. We also get the occasional hurricane and tornado. Actually, a few years ago a tornado hit my parents' neighborhood. Luckily they and their house were fine. Too bad we couldn't say the same for their neighbors...never ceases to amaze me how a twister can hit one house and not another.

Anyway, MD is ok, but getting extremely expensive and I hate, hate, hate the commutes. It seems like everybody here works in D.C. or Baltimore and the beltway is horrible. We're looking for somewhere safe, friendly, down-to-earth, and affordable. Most of all, a sense of community. I grew up in a small town with a Main Street and, boy do I miss that. Not too much to ask, huh
Come to rural Kansas it is great clean air warm days and cool nights, and cold winters in Jan Feb.

Lawrence is a great place to live. Pittsburg is a great place to live. Kansas City is a great place to live.

Wichita is not a good place to live. Too much crime, no economy, no progress.

From my experience living in KS (Lawrence) for seven years: What's good? Low cost of living, little crime, good schools, generally nice people. What's bad? Typical midwest weather, mediocre job market outside Johnson County, don't have all the "things to do" that one finds on the coasts. It's been a great place to raise our kids but once they're out of school in about ten years I wouldn't mind checking out other areas of the country.

If you're referring to illegal aliens - trust me - in a few years you will not consider that an "advantage".

I grew up in Kansas. I now live near the Mexican border.
You have no idea what you're in for.
It will change your life - and not for the better.

I think that if you ignore the politics of Kansas you might be ok. Our politicians ... well if you have read the paper in the last 3 years you know about them.

I have lived all over the world and about the only thing I like about Kansas is that there are actually 4 seasons. If I could get my husband to leave, I'd be outta here.
