I worked in an elderly man's yard and he was so fond of telling the story that he had hired two eskimos from Haskell. And they went swimming in his pool because it was a warm 32 degrees that day. For them that was warm!

I also went to KSU in Manhattan. Made some great friends who became my family. For diversity, I pick Lawrence, and for wholesomeness I would pick KSU. (Even though we had Aggieville to party in!) KSU is still a better bargain for a Division I school. Out of state tuition was cheaper than in-state tuition at U. of Nebraska.

Good? Me of course! Hah! Actually I was born in Dodge City but raised in Texas. I still visit family there.( Um, in the warmer months naturally!) I travel with our company all over and still find the pace of Kansas to be reasonably slower without being backwoods. Wichita has grown leaps and bounds! I'm bias when it comes to Dodges terrific history! Way cool! And without a doubt, KS has some very friendly loving people. It may not be the most progressive state..but it's far from the most bigoted backwoods ones I've encountered & they know who they are! Stay sweet Kansas!

What's good about Kansas? You get four different seasons. It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer, ok in spring, cold one day and warm the other day in fall. No tornadoes where I live but there's lots of thunderstorms and rain. The weather will change one hour to the next. That's the only good thing I can find about Kansas. I live in the state capitol, Topeka. A 60 mile drive to the KC metro areas. There's nothing to do in Topeka anymore unless you are married, have kids, and have a social life. Not married, no social life, and no kids stinks. It's also boring. What's very bad about Kansas? In Topeka, there are no very good paying jobs in the Technology or Science fields, unless you count working at some call center for $9/hr with benefits, fast food, warehouse, grunt jobs, or be stuck working at low pay with no benefits or chance for a career advancement at the company In other words, the salaries are so ridicously low paying unless you have a college degree in Network Support Specialist, Computer Programming, Computer Science, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Nursing, or Teaching, etc. Then you will find something very good paying. That's why I'm looking at moving to the D.C., VA, Delaware, or Maryland area for an IT job. You get taxed to death from everything from vehicles you own, RV, properties, sales tax, etc. etc.

The other thing I don't like about Kansas? Biogtry. Even though I live in the Capitol City of Kansas all my life, I had put up with my share of racism. Yes, racism. Especially when it comes to finding a very good paying job. The backwoods hicks that live in Tppeka think I don't need a very good paying job being black and all, or think I'm lazy and don't want to work. I want to work
and I'm not lazy. For example, I applied at the state six times now. I'm not lying. The town I live in seems to be stuck in the 1950's. Seems the state hires someone else way faster than me. That's sad. I have qualifcations, education, and one cert but I'm going to get more, but still can't get hired for any very good paying IT job. The only IT-related job I can find is this new inbound call center. But I am going to work on my MCSE 2003, Network+, and MCSA 2003 so I am able to find a very good paying network or system admin job.

I don't mean to laugh but your post did give me quite a chuckle. I can honestly say the whole 9 years in Wichita the only ever cowboy/cowgirls I ever saw were at the rodeo and the county bars.

My children went to a private non-demononational school there, we did not attend church and no one ever pushed anything down our throats. Wichita is not the bible belt by any means.

As for fashion you dress as you want but it is expected in some restaurants and such that you dress nice for dinner or going out.

Default Good/Bad About KS

The initial question was about the good/bad of living in KS.

Today I will focus on the bad...ICE! Ice storms!!! Have had it with the cold/snow/ice in KS. The ice is so dangerous and to have power outages when it's freezing outside and soon is freezing inside. Trying to get around on the ice.

When I retire I'm heading to a warmer climate...enough of this ridiculous weather! Now, do you want to know how I really feel?

I am moving north to escape the mild climate of eastern KS. The housing market sure isn't helping my move much right now. We have ice storms but areas much further north have mostly snow in the winter. I like the fact that New England has mostly temperatures in the 70s and 80s for highs in the summer. The longer summer daylight hours are a huge bonus. Also, you can actually enjoy winter sports in northern New England unlike in the Central Plains.

How about Colorado? It seems to be a popular destination for those that are leaving KS these days. The Front Range has a climate that features over 300 days of sun a year. The extra sun makes the cold and snow much easier to handle for most people.

Dodge City is a dump - I know because I lived there for many years.

My hubby was born and raised there. He said at one time, it was a nice town, but with all the illegals - it has taken a toll on the town.

It offers nothing for young folks. Nothing at all!!!!!!!!! Let's not forget about all the gang activity.

----------

How bad was the ice? I need to call my inlaws and see if they got pelted with it. I remember awhile back Wichita got tons of ice -
