Question Crime in Overland Park?

Hi everyone. We're moving to the Kansas City area in a few weeks for my husband's job. (From Boulder, CO.) We're looking at Johnson County (Probably Shawnee, possibly Overland Park.)

One of my husband's cousins is claiming that gang crime is rampant in OP, but I can't find anything to verify this in the news. Is there any truth to this, or is she just trying to scare us into living on the MO side? (She lives in Lee's Summit.)

Any input would be appreciated.

You can find crime statistics on the City-Data page for Overland Park:
http://www.city-data.com/city/Overland-Park-Kansas.html

I don't think there are numbers that should concern you at all. We live in Olathe but visit friends and do most shopping in OP and I think it seems like a very safe place to live. But then, no place is crime free. Notice that the overall crime rate for Overland Park is well below the national average.

is she married to someone who goes by "kcmo" perhaps?

Just kidding. I don't know what she's talking about. I live in Shawnee and am currently househunting in the area (OP, Prairie Village, Leawood, Fairway.) I've lived here for 20 years. There's no "gang" crime problem. In fact that's probably true for almost all of the KC metro area KS or MO.

I'm used to live in OP for 15 years (moved in 2004) and never had a problem - the further away from the core you get - the less chance for crime - depending upon your budget - your best bet would be south of 135th in OP or Leawood.

I'd love to know where they got their figures. I drive from my home into Portland (where I live) and I see graffiti, homelessness, gang signs, you name it. The only sign of gangs I see in the area of Overland Park and surrounding towns are on the rail cars of the trains that roll through Olathe.

I've been here since mid-March and I must say, I'm very impressed at the cleanliness of this town.

What?!? I think someone is joking with you. OP is about as crime free as you are going to find in any major metropolitan area.

Crime is not a problem in OP.

Thank you all. We kind of thought she was, shall we say, overstating the issue. Glad to know we were right!

Default live in shawnee KS

I have lived in Shawnee 4 years, I moved here from Memphis TN area and I know what living in a crime infested city is, trust me. I have a sheriff across the street from me, a policeman behind me and the new police station is within 3 miles of us, everyday we see them driving around, I feel completely safe. I am selling next year to go to East TN since we have retired and have 5 acres there, we now have a 4 bedroom with a half acre yard and community pool, we just dont need so much to keep up, wish I could sell this year!!! Its Cheaper living in TN for retired people and that is the only reason I am leaving.
