Possible move from Ontario CAN. to Kansas City
Hello....
Is it wise for me to join my unemployed hubby in Kansas City. He's been unable to find work for nearly a year now. I don't have my green card, (haven't applied yet) so I can't work. Also I have an inheritance that would ease things quite a bit. Knowing the exchange rate for Canadian/ US funds I'd be losing nearly fifteen thousand right off the bat just by crossing the border.
I know it isn't the smartest thing to do and my family is against it for all the above reasons.
The only good thing about all of this is that the real estate market in that particular county is pretty good, so investing in a home would be ideal, but not without jobs to support a home buy. Needless to say I'm a bit of an emotional wreck over this. Your honest opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks

If your husband is unemployed in the kansas city area he either has too high of expectations or he simply isnt looking. I would advise being with him but leave your money at home for now.

Hmmm seriously? and this is Kansas City, Kansas we are talking about, right?
Not to argue, but doesn't Kansas have one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation? and I don't "think" hubby has that high of expectations. He tells me he has been looking all over the place. He is 50, maybe that has something to do with it...
anyway I appreciate your honesty, I really do..thanks

Most of the metro and all of the central business district and commercial urban districts of KC are in Missouri. This question might be better off in the KC forum rather than the KS forum which is mostly out state KS (and some suburban KC) topics. Having known many people from cities in Canada, most of them tend to like the Missouri side much more than the KS side since it's more urban, liberal, diverse and the topography is more scenic. Suburban Kansas and anything Ontario couldn't be more different places. I go to Ontario (and BC) at least once a year and love it. I would stay there. American cities, especially sprawly midwestern cities, have so much blight and decay compared to Canadian cities, I don't know how you guys can live in most American cities.
But your original question is so vague, I'm not really sure what you are asking or needing. Maybe you can get more specific?
If you are in Canada and he is in KC and can’t find a job, I would think that he would be looking for a job just about anywhere in North America. .

To answer your question my husband is American, Missouri born, Kansas bred. He wants to stay in Kansas if possible. He had been in Canada for eight years before going back. (RL complications)
I've been for a visit twice and do love the Missouri side and yes thats where all the action is. Downtown KC is a bit sad for sure..urban decay indeed.
For whatever reason, (not because I'm Canadian) I thought Kansas had a high unemployment rate. Thanks for the link btw.
As far as my question is concerned, I wanted to read exactly the types of things you folks have posted.
...and it is true, Canada is a great place to live, it's a beautiful country.
Thanks all for your replies.

Kansas City, MO-KS Economy at a Glance
The unemployment rate looks to be just a little below the national average.
