Default Moving from Newport Beach, CA to Kansas city area

Has anyone moved from Newport Beach to Leawood or anywhere else that is really nice in Kansas City? We are looking for a move to be closer to family and want to know the real downsides/upsides etc. I know the schools are good (at least the BV district I've seen) and its safe in Leawood, but is it boring? What do people do in the winter? We have kids so I know they will keep us really busy all year round. I heard people join country clubs for social outlets, do you recommend any in particular that are family friendly?

It really depends if you are set on moving to JOCO or whether you are considering other high end areas of the KC metro. For example, Platte County MO (most of the area has a KC, MO address) can be quite upscale and pricy with many planned communities and high dollar golf courses.

Yes, Leawood is the most upscale larger town in KS that is not an enclave development like Mission Hills. Leawood falls into two school districts: Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley. The dividing line is generally the I-435 loop. Many people prefer the more established northern part of the Leawood known as "old Leawood." The southern part of Leawood is much newer and has more of a cookie cutter flavor. However, many houses are custom built so it feels more upscale. Yes, it is a family friendly area with a lot of very well educated professionals in high level jobs as well.
What do people do in winter? Well, many residents like to go out West to Colorado to ski during the winter because the KS/MO does not have much in the way of winter sports or activities. Weston, MO has a small ski area, but the weather does not cooperate as much as many would like.

<Disclaimer>
I did not live in Leawood, but the next town over in Overland Park. However, I am very familiar with Leawood itself.
