Wichita and Lawrence are wonderful towns to live in and both have at least one great college.

Lawrence all the way! Can't wait to move there for college myself next year. The majority of the population is the students so a lot of the population will be in or around KU itself. I haven't been outside of KU proximity for awhile but I remember some shops that had antiques. I'm sure there's several grocery/health stores. KU has plenty to offer. It is more expensive compared to a community college. Also the student body is quite large as well (nearly 30k). I think you would enjoy L-town.
Of course Wichita may seem fit to you. It is a bigger city but you could look into some outside towns. Good luck and let us know what you choose!

I would agree to take a look at Hays. Also, what do you consider "small"? To me, Lawrence is big. We live about 30 miles north of Pittsburg, KS and have lived in Salina, Manhattan and Junction City also. Manhattan has that big BioDefense deal coming in and that will keep the cost of housing up - for those who don't mind living next to such a thing that used to be on an island for safety's sake. My favorite city in Kansas is Salina, KS as it always had an open feeling since they had an Air Force Base there at one time which diversified the population - I love diversity! A better idea of what you consider "small" would be helpful. What do consider "affordable" housing also as in Kansas that can really vary - get away from the Wichita, Kansas City area and prices go down considerably. With the Manhattan area, the property is overpriced and if the Big Red One leaves Fort Riley again which they have done before the prices/values go down.

If money is no object you can find all of those things in Lawrence, but on the otherhand Wichita and Topeka are both pretty cool and have a broad range of real estate prices. My choice is Topeka its my home town and I love it here.

I would suggest either Lawrence or Manhattan. Lawrence is larger, more socially progressive, and has more to do than Manhattan, but Manhattan is in a more scenic area (and the people are arguably friendlier). Both are beautiful cities. Hays is another option, but it is much more isolated than the other two. Unlike Lawrence and Manhattan, Hays is in the middle of western Kansas, the state's most desolate region. I can't really recommend Hays over the other two, but you might want to check it out anyway.
