Independence is part of a tri-county area of Southeast Kansas, Coffeyville, Parsons and Independence are three of the biggest cities in that part of the state, It is in Montgomery County I believe, It is the most diverse city in Southeast Kansas and has a Community college, You could look in Coffeyville or Independence for housing. The are a number of people who may even commute from Parsons, Some of the best roads in Southeast Kansas go through there, If you cant get the Independence or Parsons Kansas classified online you might try the Coffeyville paper. I would think Homes would be very cheap there to buy

Independence
We have been traveling for several months and so I haven't kept up these forums. Melissa, hope you like Independence. It is definitely a small town, but I think this makes for friendlier people. In all our travels around the country, we have yet to find a small town with as nice a park as Independence has. The park staff does a great job keeping everything up, looking great. There is a nice water park, picnic areas, playground, train, miniature golf, small zoo. Elk City Lake to the west and Big Hill Lake to the east offer fishing, hiking, and camping. Independence also recently made it to the top three for "Best Tennis Towns" in the United States.

Agree with Trublu...a lot of amenities in Independence for a town of its size and (remote) location...great park, even has a good-sized zoo....an amazing water park that people from all over go visit, something like $3 to enter and it would cost $15-$20 in an urban area...not surprised about "tennis town" designation has some great-looking courts. A community college, big community hall--one of the stronger attractive towns in state for its size and location (it's not a suburb on the fringe of a metro area, it is its own metro area, so to speak.)

Our good friends went to school there and left ASAP. They are now in CO. Both sets of parents are there though. I visited the town once when they returned to renew their vows with family. It seemed like a quaint town, but both of them had no desire to return with the small town drama and families there. Sounds like a lot of good old boys type of stuff like any other town. I do remember a gas attendent though! Couldn't believe there was still a place that pumped my gas, checked my oil and cleaned my windshield! We stayed at one of the few hotels there...a Super 8 if I remember correctly. It did have a Walmart and a small downtown. I also remember the neat park with the fountain, the zoo, and kiddie park for the kids. The cemetary was right next to it too. Again, want to live there? Only if you love small towns.
