Default Advice for tracking birth records from late 1800's

My 3rd grader has a project this year to build a family tree, and sadly I don't know where my father's paternal grand father was born. I have date of birth off of his death certificate, he was born in 1883. I believe it was either in Lawrence or Jefferson in Montgomery County. But apparently Montgomery was not a county in 1883.

Has anyone ever tried to track down a birth record from that far back? Would I be better going to the county seat, or easier to go to Topeka?
Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

Depending on when your husbands relative died makes a difference in where to start your search. IF he had a Social Security number when he died ( after 1935 or so) the SS administration can probably give you the information you need. US Census information is online and you can research those databases for free. The Library of Congress website probably has links to the Census information. The Library of Congress also has quite a few of the early newspapers around the country archived for online searching. I am sorry I don't have the URL's handy to give you right now but a bit of googling should steer you in the right direction.
Good Luck,
GL2
