kcmo, you live in DC now. Why can't you let go of Kansas City and stop badmouthing Johnson County, even when you are gone? There is a forum for Washington DC, I think. Maybe you can find something to hate about that area.

Like Samantha said, WE GET IT. You hate Johnson County. That's fine. We happen to love it here, and apparently lots of other people do too. I don't much care for Missouri, and I particularly don't like Jackson County. And face it, you are pretty biased in the pictures you show and try to show Missouri as "better" than Kansas to sway opinions. Just like when you were trying to show the difference between Missouri and Kansas and you showed Missouri housing and Kansas office buildings. WTF? You know what I like about Kansas? IT'S NOT LIKE MISSOURI!!!!! I was born in Missouri. I CHOOSE to live in Kansas because I like it better. I'll take well manicured suburbs with cookie cutter houses over urban blight and no grass any day. You were talking about trees - how many trees do you see in downtown Kansas City, Missouri? Not many, huh? It's pretty ugly down there if you ask me. But the suburbs - we have trees! It's beautiful over here and I bet if you showed your new DC friends pictures of Kansas you hadn't handpicked to make it look bad, they would LOVE it. Isn't that why people keep moving to Overland Park? Because it's ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE IN AMERICA.

yes yes ... my apologies! This happens far too often around here.

Monday looks to be a BEAUTIFUL Fall day in Kansas!

You know, if I were you, when I got to Lawrence, I would just find a place to park on "Mass" (which is short for Massachusetts Ave) and walk around a bit. It's the main drag. There are lots of little local joints and cute shops.

Many of the places will have a lunch menu visible from the sidewalk. And it's always bustling ... to the extent that KS "bustles" that is!

I'm sorry I have no specific recommendations ... but just go and enjoy yourself. The perfect lunch will find you!

Thanks all for the suggestions. I tried to pack WAY too much into one day and it didn't help that I had flight issues and arrived late. I did still manage to enjoy a BEAUTIFUL day in Kansas this past Monday. My first stop was Atchinson for the Amelia Earhardt museum. It was then down to Lawrence where I didn't get time to walk around on Mass but did have lunch at 23rd St. Brewery (which was very good) and spent some time walking around campus and buying some souvenirs at the bookstore in the Union. Next stop was Topeka where I barely made it in time to check out the Brown vs. Board of Education historical site. Your capital building is also beautiful and I stopped to get a picture of just it. From Topeka I headed to Lincoln, NE via Manhattan. No time at all in Manhattan and also had to take 70 west instead of the planned Hwy 24. The drive was gorgeous and I ended my day watching a beautiful sunset while heading north on 77. Seeing the dust in a far off field being harvested against the sunset was a peaceful scene. You have a beautiful state you should be proud of. I wish I could've spent more time just relaxing and enjoying the nice folks I came across. Thanks for all the pointers. I wish I could have hit them all but time wouldn't allow. I will forever have a beautiful Kansas day in my memory.

Thanks, and you're welcome. Come back again sometime, and hopefully you'll have a little more time to see some of the stuff that didn't fit in this time. There's lots of other stuff that didn't get mentioned because everyone knew it was well beyond the travel radius for the time you had, but if you had another day or two, a lot more would fall within your reach.
