Cherryvale
Wow...I came here to see if there was anything about Cherryvale or to start a thread. I was there yesterday. My grandfather had a family there before he met and married my grandmother and had another family. I was fortunate enough to have met three of my mother's half siblings when I was a child when they came to see Grandpa. My mother never met any of them. I would love to add them to my family tree but all I have is the last name. I stopped at Cherryvale city hall. The lady there was very receptive and nice enough to try to find the name in the cemetery list. None were there. She gave me a printed sheet of contacts and web sites that might help. I talked to a few others in town, on my short stop over. Everyone was extremely friendly, including the little old man sitting on his porch waving as I left town. Cherryvale is very VERY small. I loved how it looked and felt. If you are looking for things to do, and it doesn't include gardening, talking over the fence to your nice neighbors, watching kids ride their bikes with the dog tagging along behind, or Sunday picnics in the park, then you need to look elsewhere.

The country down there is absolutely beautiful. Go west to the Flint Hills or east to the many state parks in the coal strip mines. There are some lakes in the area and fishing is super down there. One of many nice small communities in rural Kansas to retire to. Unlike the ones out west, this area does not experience severe water shortages.

Fishing Hole for kids?
Anyone heard of a place at Big Hill where only kids are allowed to fish?

The CherryBlossom festival is one of several gatherings sponsored in Cherryvale. The events are well run and low key. High school athletics are also big events.

I grew up between Cherryvale and Wichita but have been back several times over the years . Not much has changed and thats a good thing . I miss the small town lifestyle the peace and quiet no gang violence like here in Wichita being able to walk downtown and talk to evryone without fear of being shot or car jacked at any moment . evryone should check out Cherryvale at least once

There is a 'pond' area near the dam (Cherryville entrance) surrounded by a park area. This may be the area of Big Hill that you heard of.

Could you be talking about the lake we called Old Lake, not too far from what I remember as "Stand Pipe Hill" with its water tower (pipe, actually), and across the RR tracks from the old, abandoned meat packing plant? This was back in the early 50's. We passed it if we walked the tracks from school -- McKinley Elem. -- to our home in Corbin City.

Big Hiil is 3 miles east of C'vale on 19000 road. My grandfathers farm, which i grew up on is just south and west from the damn. I used to fish and swim in Big Hill Creek.
Earlier you posted in regards to McKinnely school. I attended McKinnely first and second grade.
Missed Mrs. Jones, moved to east side of tracks, attended Lincoln Central from 3rd-8th.
In August of 2008 my wife, son, daughter-in-law, and nephew spent 3 days at The Lodge at Timber Hill, what a fantastic place to be.
