Sorry for asking so many questions, but I am a safety freak.
To tell you the God's-honest truth, king, I'd go so far as to suggest that no such thing exists in Lawrence. The many years I'd lived there previously (which is one of the major draws now enticing me to return) is that I could could live/move about any part of the city and not feel threatened. Even in our more "run down" sections of town ("East Lawrence" and "Oread") there is not the sense of dread or "poverty" that is common in most cities, and I have never at any time felt ill at ease in any of the areas at any time of the day or night.

Keep in mind, however, that I am operating on somewhat "old" knowledge, as I've been away since the early 1990's. One trend I've been noticing in keeping up with the news of the area is that certain clubs-- and I shamefully must say particularly those which attract high numbers of African-Americans --tend to be magnets for violence, incl. gun violence (most of these troublemakers are actually coming in from Topeka and the KC areas).

When I was living there, the most common crimes related to vehicular & home burglaries (stereo systems, in both cases, always seemed the popular items to run off with), and the areas most affected were usually those in closest proximity to the University, both on and around campus. Now it appears that business vandalism is a growing problem.

The only part of the city which is admittedly a tad bit of a mystery to me is "North Lawrence," on the opposite side of the river: It's a quaint though slightly impoverished area, almost like a little community unto itself without a whole lot going on-- positive or negative --it's just sort of... "there," know what I mean? But again, as with the rest of the city, it's never been problematic to any real degree.

All-in-All, I think you'd be really amazed.

If you relocate anywhere with out money or any way to make more than minimum wage ,you are not going to have any choice about where you live. In fact you are going to have to expect that you will live in the most crime ridden or least desirable part of town. Even in Kansas that means far away from the city center or public transportation.

At your age I think you would want to enroll in college some where and live in the dorms for at least a year. College towns are littered with thirty- year -old near do wells who came to town as a once young optimist

Default Salina is best

You said your a safety freak so I would suggest moving to Salina. The state training academy for police officers is here. CIA, FBI, DHS and the DOD and DOJ hold all of their training sessions here. We have a base here where the soldiers conduct riot drills on a daily basis (just in case of course). The military has fighter and UAV fly overs and due to undisclosed activities satalite surveillance is maintained on Salina 24/7.

Seriously man, the only other safest place is Camp David. People are friendly, good colleges here.
