Are you desparate to move and low on funds etc
I would very seriously check out county tax auctions for a place to buy. Many of these small Ks towns have small house that come up at tax sales. I saw a house in Blue Mound Ks in Lynn County Ks sell for $450.00(looked worth about 15k imo). Many of these little house in great shape only sell in the 15-20k range.
I think a person can find great value in one of these places. Kansas has very strict rental laws that favor the rentor over the landlord. That is why you see many vacant house in thes little towns. When a tenant files a complaint they can reap a fine of $1500.00 or more from the landlord. These do not make good rentals for this reason.
Sure most of the people on this forum can afford much more. I am trying to reach those that are in a bad spot such as low income, kids, bad neighborhood or apartment complex, needing to get out but don't have the money or know how to access this unkown possibility.
Counties usually have the auctions in the springtime.

Your suggestion is definitely helpful. However, I would not recommend anyone moving to Linn County Kansas. First of all the county has very few non-farm jobs. Second, it is located a long distance away from the KC metro and the higher gas prices would make commuting quite difficult. Another strong negative about Linn County is that their is a massive coal power plant located in La Cygne, which is in the northeast portion of the county. If you are looking for a small house in Kansas in a more rural clean location away from power plants I would recommend buying a smaller house in one of the small towns surrounding Hays, Kansas, which is a regional center. NW Kansas generally has much cleaner air than eastern Kansas because it is a much more rural area away from urban areas, industry, and coal power plants.

The smoke from the coalplant in Lynn county most usually blows over into Mo. I have never heard of anyone having a problem ith the plant. Do you have an example?
Let's play example: I am a (not really)grandfather of three children. They live with their mother in a apartment complex that is downhill and going farther downhill. In other words "a bad enviroment". My daughter quit school at age 17 and had her first child. Now she has a total of three and even with all the assistance she gets she cannot make it and the kids are in danger from the surroundings. I am tired of doing all the things to give them a good life and even with what i do i cannot protect them from the surroundings.
This is an instance where any county in Ks that has this type housing can be beneficial. Get them out of a bad enviroment and then build from there.

Well, I would never locate in a county that has a large coal power plant if other options were available. Those plants emit mercury, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, radiation, and carbon dioxide. Once again, I would recommend a smaller town near a regional center in Kansas because the regional centers typically have a decent job market. Hays Kansas has one of the "better" economies in western Kansas and their are LOTS of clean small towns with very affordable housing. I am sure the air quality in NW Kansas is much better as well. I am not familiar with schools in that area, though.
Here is the map showing where power plants are located in the US: Click on the individual state to find out more information.

Then by your account Plains10. No one should be living in the KCMO metro area. All the stuff you mention blows north to the KCMO metro area. No wonder my skin keeps tingling!lol Are you saying this is worse than the yellow cloud you can see hanging over the Argentine district of KCKS? Worse than the smog in LA? Those are my target types. I doubt they would be upset by the trade off.

Actually, the KCP&L utility is finally going to install modern pollution control devices on the plants in La Cygne and the plants near Weston. This should help out some in terms of improving the air quality in the KC metro. However, the modern pollution control devices for those plants will not be installed in the near future. However, coal power plants will still emit millions of tons of carbon dioxide every year. This is a man-made source of CO2, which is a greenhouse gas. Actually, their was a story that came out a couple of months ago concerning the power plants in Kansas City, KS. Apparently, the utility involved was potentially found guilty because of several illegal modification to the power plants without telling the EPA. This case will be investigated because it directly affects the air quality of the city. LA does have bad air pollution, but California does not have any coal plants in the entire state. They get a lot of their energy from natural gas plants, hydro power, wind energy, and importing cheap coal produced electricity from other states.
