Hahaha, you hit the nail on the head....I had the good fortune of spending my entire childhood in Olathe, but I didn't fully appreciate the level of evangelical nuttiness until I went (far) away to college and realized that the majority of my friends had never been, well, tricked into attending Jesus camp and forced into tears by crazy ministers. All we'll do at camp is ride horses and go to the pool, huh? All kidding aside, not everyone is like that, but it's certainly a defining characteristic of the city. And there are a wide range of fine-dining establishments, from the Olive Garden to Joe's Crab Shack and everything in between. OK, I don't want to put down the chain restaurant because they deliver on their limited promises, but it wouldn't kill the city planners to seek out a few more independent restaurateurs. I agree that the housing developments are hideous- that's what you get when you seek out unrestrained growth at whatever cost. New urbanism and sustainable development arent even a thought. If you're looking for places to live, I think you can do a lot worse than Olathe, but I'm not rushing to move back.

To the person looking to purchase a home around the Overland Park, KS area but will only be there about 2-4 years.........I agree with many of the comments regarding housing in surrounding bedroom communities......you don't get what you pay for in terms of housing. I experienced this about 5-years ago when I moved from Marshalltown, IA to the KC area due to following a job that evaporated a year ago because of a buyout. Because of the sticker shock in housing versus quality, I decided to expand my search south of Overland Park, KS down highway 69. Ended up in the souther part of Miami county with a 30-year old ranch home on 40-acres. We absolutely love it as the 4-lane highway (69) is on the back side of my property and the old highway 69 is on the other side of my property............in essence, blacktop all the way to the front door. My property is 20-30 minutes from the heart of Overland Park. Even though I am a professional with a Ph.D. in a science field, I have learned down through the years, I can remodel a house much better than any $80/hr contractor.

I am glad you found what you were looking for Your property might be more valuable down the road as the sprawl starts to infilitrate into Miami County at a faster rate. The one big negative about Miami County is that it is a much further drive to get to the KCI airport.

I left home within a month of graduating from High School and have never lived in JoCo since. I was tricked into going to that "Youth for Christ" camp and we spent very little time having fun - mostly being yelled at and scrared into getting saved. They taught us about the evils of rock-n-roll and gay men, although I didn't understand what they were talking about. They told us to hit gay men if they ever touched us. It was total "Jesus Camp"!
