But they're getting better. Must be a new sheriff in town.

That is a big decline. The last few years are not that bad for a city that size.

Actually the crime has gotten worse according to the 2010 stats, and for a city of topeka's size those numbers are bad. The violent crime rate is 3 times the national average, and the overall crime rate is 2 times the national average.

I spend a lot of time in Topeka and don't feel threatened at all. The crime rate hardly compares to other areas of the country. I'm sure if someone is from a small town in Kansas Topeka might seem like an urban area, but I don't consider it one at all. Sure there's crime, but it's not extreme. Guess I grew up in an area much larger with many more problems. I'm not a fan of Topeka and wouldn't want to live there, but the crime rate has nothing to do with it.

I don't pay much attention to numbers, as they can be manipulated many ways. I'd need to know the comparable population of the cities in this report. If you could provide a link I'd like to see the comparison cities and where they are getting their data from.

Well obviously you haven't lived where I lived in topeka, because the crime i've seen have has been extreme(e.i shootings, stabbings, beatings). I have been to areas that are worse like baltimore, kansas city, new york, and when I tell them about topeka they're amazed(not in a good way).

Moderator cut: link removed

I have tried to find the crime stats from the 90's, but im pretty sure you know about topeka in the 90's.

So, Kansas City is worse? I don't feel threatened in KC, so Topeka would be a breeze.

If you are uneasy about it, why don't you leave?

You probably don't feel threatened, because you don't live in high-crime areas in kansas city. But believe what you want, topeka wouldn't be a "breeze" if you came down here. I'm not uneasy, I just trying to inform people.
