My wife is spending the month of March working in Hawaii. from the 28th of march to 7th of April we will be taking a vacation.
Kauai has been suggested.

Can someone suggest a good itenerary and places to stay.
Wife is tans, I just plain burn. So some place with a beach, but large umbrellas would be a good combination.

I'd like to do it for $2,000 (exclusive of airfare).

Also, what are the 'resort fees'? Are those like in Vegas where they just tack an extra $10 to $50 on to the price of your hotel room?

Most resorts will have lounges with shade things attached. They usually run around $25 per day. Umbrellas don't work in HI, due to the wind.
You might look at renting a condo, usually less expensive than a resort and you can cook some of your own meals. You will definately need a car on Kauai. Poipu & Princeville are popular spots.

Make sure you see and swim at all the beaches on the northern shore.

Are the beaches at the north shore better?

I'm thinking of splitting my time between the St. Regis an the Sheraton.
My wife will be getting a Hawaii licence to drive, so the rates are normal.
havent decided on the mix. More time at the St. Regis or more at the Sheraton.

Or should I be staying somewhere else?

you can always go more local and spend less money. there are plenty of local run beach houses, hotels and stuff that are still conforting and beautiful without the large price tag! Other than the beaches you mentioned, what other types of hobbies or activities are you interested in?

The reason for the island is to walk the coast, see the canyon, snorkal and scuba dive. I'd also like to sail. Renting a hobiecat would be good. or another sailboat uner 26 feet

You don't mention where you are from, but you should know that you must surrender your current DL at the HI DMV and they notify your "old" state that you no longer have a current DL in that state. There's also a written test, with Hawaii specific driving laws, that will need to be passed.

If your wife doesn't have a current DL, she will aslo have to take a driving test.
