Ok so Im trying to move to Kauai either this year or next and i have most of the wrinkles ironed out. The one thing that I'm stumped on is i've searched all over the internet and I cant find anything that two working parents can do with the kids over the summer break from school. Any ideas?

It's actually astonishing how many ARE available, though I guess it depends on the age of your kids. Though I do agree many are hard to find on the internet--small organizations, not that web-savvy, can't get the info posted in time (sometime you see a schedule from last year). You can find a lot once you get here.

My kid is 6 and my wife got her signed up for 4 different camps this summer: Na Keiki O Ka 'Aina (children of the land) in Kapaa has a Hawaiian culture camp running for several weeks. The Humane Society has Critter camp a few weeks (not continuous). The big one is Kama'aina Kids, run by teachers and held at the Wilcox elementary in Lihu'e--but they do crafts and activities, not school work. For a real summer school, Island School has about a month of real class-work, along with other activities. Also at Island School is the Kaua'i Academy of Creative Arts summer program where kids choose dance, art, music, and drama classes, up to 6 per day.

In addition to the county programs that NandVsMom linked, I think there is also Junior Lifeguard program for a few weeks. Then there are a few others, such as a week or two at National Tropical Botanical Gardens, and a few private ones on the North Shore.

Thanks for the help. Kama'aina kids looks like just the thing. My kids are 2 and 4. Just looking ahead. I just got an email that I passed the exam for the police department. I took it over the weekend. Now hopefully I can just pass the next few phases...

Just a follow-up: my daughter is at Na Keiki O Ka 'Aina now, and she loves it. From what I've seen dropping her off and picking her up, it is a small but well run camp, with a variety of locals who come in to teach Hawaiian culture: hula, fire knife (twirling, with foam ends for practice), Hawaiian plants, etc. And the rest of the time, they go to local gardens, swimming holes, beaches, etc.
