Can one get a P.O. Box on Kauai while still living on the Mainland? We will be relocating to Kauai around June (as retirees), and will need to provide a forwarding address for our mail, packages, etc. We intend to live on the North Shore, so we are looking for a box in Hanalei, Princeville or Anahola. Anyone have advice on how to do this remotely? Mahalo.

I suggest you start by calling the two post offices below and asking them. Some of the smaller Hawaiian Post Offices have waiting lists for available boxes, or other "local rules." In my community there is no mail delivery at all, so each resident is entitled to a free small PO Box... but because of new construction, there is a shortage of small boxes, hence a waiting list.

But if they have mailboxes available, ask if you can apply for one of theirs at your current, local post office. You have to show two forms of ID plus a proof of current residence (mortgage, lease, insurance policy) so the online service won't help. If you do that, be sure to update your residence address once you are settled in Hawai'i.

USPS
5-5226 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, HI
(808) 826-1034

4-4350 Kuhio Hwy, Anahola, HI
(808) 822-4710

If they don't have available boxes, or for any reason you can't rent a PO box in advance, you can usually rent a Private Mailbox remotely... two such services I see on Kauai are:

Private Mailbox
Princeville Ranch Adventures, 5-4280 Kuhio Hwy. Suite G103, Princeville, HI 96722
(808) 826-7331

The UPS Store, 4-831 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746
(808) 821-0735

Good luck

At worst, you can do a change of address once in Kauai when you have an address in Kauai. Just have mainland friends get and forward mail while you secure new address OR have it forwarded to "general delivery" at one of the Kauai post offices and poke your head in for a few weeks/month until you are not longer receiving mail.

Best of luck, but Open D's advice is best

We just got a private post office box at Princeville Mail Center. Easy and reasonable. We were able to get the mailbox long distance. We had to have a notorized post office form, plus copies of ID and proof of who we are, insurance cards and voter registration. They wanted 3 month minimum which worked for us. We'll add another month once we're on Kauai. (we'll spend the winter in Princeville for 4 months.

Wonderful, kaletjo! We just sent some packages to ourselves today, UPS. They said they'd hold our packages until we get there. It's so convenient for us too, close by our condo!
