I broke down last week and bought a two-pound sack of lychee in the Bay Area...brought in from China no less...they were just OK...just enough to remind me of home. They weren't quite that bright red color of those I remember picking near Anahola...the imported ones were kinda' a zinc chromate color. Sweet enough but not as sweet or juicy as those I remember eating a bagful of outside the Roxie Theater (Kapa'a) before catching a Saturday matinee on a hot summer day...

How's the crop in Kaua'i this year?

How much per pound are they selling for (Foodland, Safeway)? How much at a farmer's market? How much on the side of the road?

We bought a bag at the farmer's market a couple of weeks ago - maybe 3 or 4 pounds? - for $10; small bags were $5. I don't eat them, but our girls said they were delicious and they disappeared quickly. Last week a vendor was selling several branches of lychee tied together for $3 - the branches were loaded so have no idea how much the fruit actually weighed. But they sure looked good. We bought star fruit from her though - 4 for $1. And oranges and limes.

Our lychee tree has produced a few this year, but they're all way at the top of the tree and we can't get to them.
