Anyone from Middlesboro?
Any thoughts about Middlesboro would be appreciated. My wife and I are considering to move there in our retirement. We are interested in senior interests, medical care. We have been living in Colorado for 33 years. Too expensive to stay here in retirement.

Middlesboro is Beautiful!
My bro-in-law and his family live in Middlesboro. It's a beautiful area that has a Mayberry-esque feel. No matter which direction one turns, a mountain is in view. It seems as though everyone knows everyone else, and everybody has been very friendly to me when I've visited.
While there are several private practitioners and a local hospital, more intensive medical needs may need to be addressed in Knoxville, which I understand is a short drive from Middlesboro.
Middlesboro also has a country club that offers dirt cheap membership, as well as a respectable golf course and swimming pool. At least one of the small neighborhoods has it's own pool, and there is a public pool, as well.
On several occasions, my husband and I have considered moving there, but our circumstances (kids in college) just don't allow for it right now. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure about it yet but I don't think we can go to a Tennessee medical facility with insurance from Kentucky. Whatever Middlesboro has to offer I hope is adaquate. Their hospital seems to cover it all.

I don't live in Middlesboro, but have been there a few times for my job when I lived in Knoxville. Middlesboro is less than 1 mile from the state line of Tennessee and Virginia. Middlesboro appears to be the retail/medical hub for a multi-county region which includes Knox and Bell County Kentucky, as Claiborne County, TN, and a Virginia county. The last time I was at the Middlesboro mall in the 90s, there were at least as many Tennessee tags as Kentucky.
Claiborne County, TN (growing pop.) now has a larger population than Bell County, KY (losing pop.), even though it doesn't have a decent sized city like Middlesboro. If you are concerned about receiving medical care, you may want to choose to live in Claiborne County, and take a short drive to Middlesboro for your shopping needs.

I am from Middlesboro and will be moving back there when me and hubby retire. I don't think there would be any problem at all insurance wise if you should have to go to Knoxville for care. A lot of my family that is down there have done that very thing and I have never heard of any of them complaining about insurance problems.
Middlesboro is beautiful but that is just my opinion. I know I am going to enjoy going back down there to live and I think you will too.

DH and I went to Middlesboro to see a WW2 plane that had been dug out of a glacier and rebuilt. It was absolutely beautiful there. We were there in the fall and the colors were amazing.
The company I worked for had HQ in Knoxville, but the main manufacturing plant was in Middlesboro. All of the people I worked with from Middlesboro were exceptionally nice. Which was exactly what we found when we visited there...
Although we went to a buffet and there was no cream gravy for my chicken fried steak. Very odd. But not enough to turn me off that little town.

Hi and many thanks to MurphyPl1, Gypress, nightrider127, memphis2 and others who responded to my inquiry about Middlesborough. After searching my present options,
I understand I can take Anthem Care which is Blue Cross/Blue Shield and I'm told it
is good anywhere. Next step is to find out if there are doctors in Middlesborough who
take new Medicare patients. I hear stories about that and the other day, one of our friends told us he had to give up his doctor and that was here in Colorado. He wasn't
able to find out if he wasn't take Medicare or Medicare wasn't taking him. Could be either way. Right now things are on hold just a bit. We both officially retired 12/31. Now we're working on some things around the house and setting up local insurance but the time is coming. Does anyone know about the water situation there in SE Kentucky?
We've been living with restrictions here in Colorado for many years.
Thanks, all
Lyle

If there is a water restriction, I don't know about it. We were down there this past summer and while they hadn't got near as much rain as they should have, I heard no talk about any water restrictions.
I love my little hometown, even if it is far from perfect. I think you will love it too. They have good roads in the area and if you need something that can only be found in a larger city, Knoxville is only 64 miles away.
