Default Taylorsville, Mt Eden question?

I am so glad I read another post and saw that Shepherdsville is not recommended. I was looking there, so now I'll move on to looking at Taylorsville, Mt. Eden, Shelbyville, and Mt. Washington. Can anyone tell me what these towns are like? Will it be a long drive to pick something up at the store? How do the schools rank? I know Oldham county is better but I can't afford 5-10 acre ranch in Oldham and still commute to South Louisville for work. Just trying to find a compromise. I have 2 very large dogs and 3 kids under 9 yrs. old, so I'm looking for some room to roam. I also want to get some chickens, goats, etc. So that means that I can't move into a subdivision. How are the people? What are the roads like? How good are the city/county governments? Any ridiculous taxes or fees? Any new retail or business developments? Any help on the areas would be great.
