Can anyone tell me about the school system, hospital, shopping, etc in Lancaster or in the rural areas of Garrad County? My wife & I just moved to Harrodsburg to an apt, but hope to find a nice home between here and Lexington. I work in Harrodsburg & she works at UK so we'd like to find something that isn't a bad commute for either of us. It'd be nice to find a 1-15 year old home with 1-10 acres for a reasonable amount. We don't have kids yet, but will one of these days so a the school system is a consideration.

We've been talking about Woodford, Jessamine, & Anderson counties so far, but it looks like Garrad county wouldn't be a bad drive either and might be more affordable housing so I thought we ought to consider it too.

Of the counties you listed Woodford would have the best school system. The hospitals in each of these communities are small and are probably fine for minor things. For anything major or serious though you would probably want to come to Lexington. Same thing for shopping. There may be a few small stores but no major malls.

Default Garrard......

I gotta say that the school system there, although small, is pretty darn good! My daughter's school competed against them in an academic meet last year, and we won by a nose. I love the area, myself, and especially like Lancaster. Danville and Harrodsburg are close seconds, because of the small town/historical feel. Danville college is a great school as well. The housing market in Lancaster is pretty mixed, with either real expensive homes, or real cheap homes. I would contact a good realtor to get a feel for the market. There are several in the area, but if you would like, I can send you some names through a p.m.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the area!

Talking Kentucky bound

Joanna / lexingtongal, thanks for the posting regarding the schools and other interesting facts. I would love some additional information on Garrad county. I plan to retire there in a few years and purchase a business to run as part of a retirement plan. I am currently a California resident who is sick of the rat race and rude population. My family is from MS and I have always enjoyed the lifestyle. The big idea at this point is to build a house on the land I already own in Homestead Herrington (5 acres purchased 2 years ago) and possibly buy a bar/grill to run in lexington. Any input or opinions would be greatly appriciated, especially if you are familiar with that part of the county We have visited several times and love it there. Thanks in advance for any help or guidance

Jim
