Default Recent CDC Report about KY Physical Activity Rank

CDC report: Inactivity highest in Southern, Appalachian states - USATODAY.com

Does this article reflect the KY that you know?

The other day, I was walking in Lexington Arboretum when I saw a newscaster with a tv camera recording a lead for the above story. I wondered where else he may have recorded his lead.

Please don't see it that way. Notice I asked if this is the KY that you know.

I know a much more complicated picture than the CDC report presents. However, I defer to other posters to speak up about this. The report does not reflect the KY I know. However, I first defer to other posters.

The Arboretum is among many of the locations throughout KY that present a very positive image of activity.

I was hoping members would discuss all sides of the above reported story. It's in high profile mainstream news.

See it as you will, but Kentuckians need to see threads and news reports like this to grasp and understand problems and then develop a plan to improve upon those issues.

I would have never posted the article; I am, after all, overweight. But I'm also not 275 lbs.+ of non-muscle and smoking 2-3 packs of cigarettes everyday like many people you see throughout the state (and the South, really).

Bingo. The only worse than a problem is refusing to admit the problem exists. I'm all for extolling the good points of Kentucky, of which there are many. But I don't see any purpose in refusing to admit or discuss our weak points honestly.

With the past four months of weather, that takes going outside to get some excerise out of the question for those four months.

While I'm not one to talk about inactivity being pretty heavy myself, I'm with EclecticEars and Off Topic in having to admit while we should embrace the good KY has to offer, there needs to be conversation regarding the areas where KY needs to improve.

Embrace the good Kentucky has to offer....that's a good thought but, no one out side and a lot inside Kentucky don't want to hear about the good points.

I made an attempt to gather some information over on another thread and it seems I was off topic. I Better shut up.

I think the culture in Appalachian States ( im from western VA) in general has become destructive and has given up in many areas , over the years. The people in mountain states seem to be raised with an 'F it' mentality about certain things and weight and fitness are one of those factors. Not to mention, eating is more of a social thing in Appalachia and the south. In addition, many people eat cheap food in mountain/southern areas and cheap food is FULL of checmical that throws hormones, chemicals, sugar levels and thyroid completely into non human looking modes.

I lived in europe and the people eat lots of sweets and have portion sizes simular to americas, the difference is , their FDA (or equivilant) has stricter guidelines and the people are more conscious of eating foods with less packaging, preserves and chemicals. There is hardly a fat kid to be found, but they are always snacking on bread, cheese and chocolate! BY the way, no one there goes to the gym and mothers of 5 children were only like 20 pounds over weight, CRAZY stuff!

Wonder why MIchelle Obama will not discuss the real prob with american food? BEcause people do not want to change american food restrictions. Michelle wants a pat on the back, but doesnt want to get to the REAL root of the prob, which is not that people are eating mostly sweets or their portion sizes...but what our country allows to be sold and injected /hidden in our foods, that causes are bodies to malfunction and shut down until people start getting the third stomach effect
even when you try to be healthier, there are so many hidden monsters behind the label, there needs to be gov intervention. Until then appalachians/southerners need to get back to the garden (no butter and fried foods) and boycot all the crap in wrappers!

And across the nation actually. Obesity and bad habits are not isolated to the south.
