Actually a cool story! Thanks for sharing.

I've always kind of liked Paducah. Sure, most of the town is dumpy, but their downtown area is quite nice.

I like also like the fact that all of their regional shopping options are concentrated along a few blocks of Hinkleville Road and not spread throughout the city in some lackidasical fashion (but that's beside the point and not the reason why artists move to Paducah).

The Artists Relocation Program is a form of glorified welfare. Most of these people have failed as artists in large metropolitan areas, and relocating to Paducah is their only alternative to getting a day job.

On top of that, they're politically active, and some of their goals are adverse to the overall good of the city. They were already successful at having a bus station relocated away from their neighborhood.

The program is also a perverse form of eminent domain, that if further expanded, could drive what's left of the working class out of the city. The end result would be a yuppie welfare class, heavily subsidized by city grants.

Got any links to back up those assertions?

Here is a link to the bus station story: Greyhound dispute continues | WPSD Local 6 - News, Sports, Weather - Paducah KY | Local

As for the rest, who cares. No one is moving to Paducah anyway. In fact, people are fleeing.

Except for the bus station relocation, the post wasn't intended as factual. It's the opinion of someone who's in Paducah everyday and has observed the situation evolve over the past decade.

The only links there are, would be through The Paducah Sun, which would be a wasted effort. The Paxton's facilitated the program from the start, and also own the newspaper, and most other local media outlets. Investigative journalism is contrary to their goals.

You must be an artist, and I struck a raw nerve. Why else would a Florida resident concern themselves with the minutia of Paducah KY politics?

I'm from SE Mo, have lived in the Paducah area, and have friends that still live there, not that any of that should matter.
No, I'm not an artist, the small, very historic Mo Mississippi river town I hail from has had a thriving artists colony since the 30s, and none of what you have spoken of has come to pass there, except for increased tourism.
I should have known your post was merely an opinion, and not based on fact.

Here's the basic outline of the program:

Paducah Artist Relocation Program | Paducah Renaissance Alliance

Reads like a welfare program to me.

I'm been to Ste. Genevieve numerous times in my life. There are socioeconomic differences between Ste. Gen and Paducah. Paducah is small in population, but has the characteristics of a decaying urban center, rather than the challenges of a small rural area. A solution for one, may not be a solution for the other.

I see you bothered to look at my profile after the fact.
I never said what works for Ste Gen would be an ideal fit for Paducah, I merely pointed out the fact that SG has benefited from all the artists in the area with increased tourism, one would think that Paducah could do the same.
It doesnt seem like any kind of welfare program at all, merely the brainchild of someone who realizes that having artists in those properties is a good idea to rehabilitate an entire neighborhood, and draw in tax revenue dollars from sales of art, increased property values which also mean more tax dollars, etc, etc.
Some of the locals said the same things in Ste Gen when some of the local ladies started the whole promotion of tourism there in the late 50s and early 60s.
Thank goodness no one paid attention.
