Cat,I im always happy to answer any question anyone has about Pikeville..Because of land availability for development we will always be a small town and we prefer that.
Despite what some people say we are part of the 21st century, with the conveniences of good shopping, a good 4 year college and a community college, good telecommunications and a modern ever expanding hospital.......and always that great view from our porches

Miss Blue,
Thank you. I think my hubby and I will come back to Pikeville and give it another try. Being a Michigander, I can tell you that we have lots of bad areas here. I just remember that Pikeville is a nice, quiet, beautiful area!

I have a question------why is the cost of living index that high?-- 88.4
Here are some other cost of living indexes for a few oyjer places in KY--
Corbin----- 81.5
London---- 81.6
(even a bigger city like Bowling Green) 87.2
Comparing it to a few places in NE Tennessee--
Bristol---- 78.3
Johnson City-- 82.6
Perhaps there is a reason why cost of living in Pikeville is higher than most comparable places.

Yeah, why is Pikeville's cost of living index much higher than even London-Corbin-Williamsburg? I mean, Pikeville has a medical school and is a regional center of commerce and legal activities, but it's only a small town of 6,300 people (no offense to those who live there and like it.)

I checked cost of living index of other Kentucky cities that have a college/university and compared their cost of living index to Pikeville.
Pikeville-------------- 88.4
Richmond------------87.6
Bowling Green--------87.2
Lexington------------86.2
Murray--------------85.4
Louisville------------85.0
Berea --------------83.8
Quite surprised to see " little "Pikeville with a higher cost of living index than all others mentioned above and mentioned in my previous post.
Why ??????????????
When Diane Sawyer did that program on poverty in Eastern KY, posters were quick to point out that Pikeville is not typical of the area mentioned.
With that high ( 88.4 ) of a cost of living index, I would agree.

I agree that living within he city limits of Pikeville is more expensive than living in the county outside the city limits..One of my daughters lives in town to be near the hospital where she works and her water, garbage pickup, cable tv are more expensive than what I pay..They have their own utilities, garbage pickup, cable tv, city police and fire dept.Due to the limited land to expand for more homes and apartments, the residents do pay over and above what I pay for the convenience to jobs....
I guess it depends on which survey you read and the year it refers to

I was born and raised in south florida, my mother was born and raised in pike county in a holler called lookout!! After my first marriage ended in 1990, i took my babies and moved to marrowbone ck i lived there for 4 yrs and then i met a man married and moved to greasy ck i lived there for 4 yrs until our marriage ended in 1997. I loved it there!! However, at that time, there was not much for young people to do!! Nor were there much employment!! I guess because my family was from there,it made it easier for me to be excepted, yet i do agree mountain people do not trust easy!!!!!! However, its a good place to retirer and just enjoy the mountains!!! And all their beauty!!! I did move back to florida with much regret!!! My husband and i, are looking to move back to the mountains of tennessee in the spring 2010!!! Just for the record the people are wonderful people!! Mgflorida
