I want to propose to my girlfriend, but I want it to be something very memorable and special.

I have a couple ideas, but I like to have a special place that we could always go back to, to remember this special occassion.

I have lived in KY all my life, but can't think of one place in KY where the view is so breathtaking and beautiful that she will always remember that day and want to come back to visit. Plenty of great places, just can't make my mind up on which one and I know I haven't seen all that KY has to offer.

Any ideas?

Depends, which part of Kentucky are you in? I suspect a five hour or more drive to get from Pikeville to Owensboro might make one grumpy.

What part of KY are you in, or where are you willing to travel within the state? There are tons of places in KY with breathtaking gorgeous views. Check out the state parks in eastern KY if you want the mountains/hills (ie Natural Bridge state park Kentucky State Parks - Home or Kingdom Come State Park Kentucky State Parks - Home).

If you're up around Louisville, there is a company at Bowman Field that gives classic Biplane tours of the area and some people have done engagements there (Classic Biplane Tours). When I proposed, after a day of other activities and dinner together I took my girlfriend on a riverboat ride on the Ohio River and proposed there. It goes out to where there are some nice houses upriver and you have some great views of downtown as well. Now since we live here, she can look and remember our day every time she crosses the river. You could probably do something similar in northern KY at Cincy.

What kind of places have you already considered? If you can make it something that is special to the two of you, that would also be good.

One place my mother has always said would be a great place for proposing is Columbus Belmont State Park, overlooking the Mississippi River. About once a month us and several other families from Mayfield would go spend the afternoon there cooking out and just having fun. But sitting there in the picnic shelter watching the sun set over the trees in Missouri was a nice relaxing way to end the trip.
But I've also heard it doesn't matter where or when you propose. Good luck!

There's a place in Kentucky that's on the United Nations World Heritage List.

What does your girlfriend enjoy? Is she a girly-girl, an outdoorsy type, a young businesswoman? Her personality and likes and dislikes will provide clues to just the right place. What is her favorite book? her favorite movie? Is she sentimental or matter of fact or a little of both?

How about a historic house with a romantic history? Ask the curator if there are any special events coming up for the local historic home-museums. A beautiful flower garden? A horse-drawn carriage ride (near the end of the ride - should she say no or stall you, you don't want to have it drag on and on, though I certainly hope she'll say yes!) A candlelight dinner? One of the "dinner trains" might be cool (check the one that goes to Bardstown).

A concert of romantic music? An outdoor drama, with a romantic picnic for two just before?

Or if she's up to it, go to the U.S. 127 World's Longest Yard Sale (two weeks from now) and tell her you've just found something wonderful, just for her - then pull out a huge fakey "diamond" ring (she'll likely want to select her own), or what looks like an old love letter, tied up with blue ribbon, but make it from you to her : "My dear Miss (first name),

During the time of our acquaintance, you have become very dear to my heart..." etc. Find a vintage etiquette book for examples of 19th century proposals. Or "find" an intriguing old box - with a ring or proposal message inside. Of course, if she'd think this was corny and unbelievably dumb, forget it!

Just think about your girl and go with what works and what will be a delightful, memorable, and welcome surprise for her. Good luck, and let us know what she replies!

If your girl loves caves, then Mammoth is awesome. I've done the down and dirty caving tours there and it was a blast. If she's not particularly a fan, I would say picking a dark, damp hole where the ring (I assume you bought her) isn't going to sparkle wouldn't be the best idea.
