just wondering which areas seem to be very rural. I heard on CD people mention that some areas are 2 hrs from highways and markets. Is it true? Looking more towards western KY......................... thanks

No. That is extremely exaggerated. I can't speak to every property in the far eastern counties of Kentucky, but even in the most rural of those counties, in 2011, there are good arterial roads in and out. You'll also find full service groceries nearly everywhere. While they may be an IGA (Independent Grocerers Assoc) or an other independent, you'll always be "in-range" of groceries, gasoline, and other aminities.

I grew up in McLean County, a nearly abandoned farming area of Kentucky, and you would be no more than 20 minutes to a Kroger or Walmart, etc.

In McLean County, you would be 30 minutes to a passenger airport (OWB), or (EVV). You would be two hours to (SDF) or (BNA) or less than 3 hrs to (STL) or (CVG). The former being limited service and then scaling up to world-wide non-stop airline service.

Best part of McLean County, a fantastic school system based on Kentucky compariative statistics.

Yeah, there is no place in KY that isolated. Every county has at least one town that has the basics and the counties in KY are very small, there are 120 in the state. There probably aren't too many little pockets in KY that are further than 30 minutes from a Wal-Mart anymore.

Cutie, like Tom said about where he grew up, you won't find anything like that here in western Ky. I've mention Cadiz to you in other posts. We have 2 groceries, a Dollar Store and a Fred's, and 3 gas stations in town. 3 more gas stations if you go 5 miles out to Interstate 24. Where my stepdaughter lives, 10 miles south of town, her kids (8 and 15) walk a mile down the road to the little country store to get a sandwich or a coke every now and then. There's several of those little stores around. We're 18 miles from Hopkinsville, which is the "hub" for this part of western Ky. More places to shop and eat. Tom also mentioned airports. Here in western Ky. Paducah has a regional airport, with 2 flights daily to Chicago. We're also a little over an hour from Nashville for flights out, or a night out at the Grand Ole Opry or any of the Nashville night life.
