Have any of you "friends of coal" ever flown over eastern Kentucky on a clear day - and looked down? If not, take a look at GoogleEarth, and see what mountaintop removal coal extraction has done to our once-beautiful land.

Of course, it's not just the esthetics. It's the devasted forests, poisoned waterways, destroyed wildlife habitat, monopolistic out-of-state, sometimes out-of-country coal company ownerships (check out Essar - based in India, this mega-company operates surface mines under many different names in eastern Ky and WVA, and is in big trouble with the EPA at present for its lawbreaking activities).

Coal is on its last legs - natural gas is on the rise. Fracking presents its own problems (earthquakes in central Arkansas?? Check it out...), but gas extraction does not cause anywhere near the degree of destruction done by mountaintop removal.

You can't put it back.

Well I got the plate because my grandpa worked in the mines back in the 1950's when he lived in Hazard and later moved his family to London.

I wonder who will be the first in line to protest when the lights go off??? I guess we'll see how tough the tree huggers are then. It's kinda like having your cake and eating it to. Contrary to popular belief of this generation it don't work that way.

I sometimes wonder about what the grant $ greedy "Scientest" have to say about our enviroment, earth ,air ,water. Believe it or not, this old world ain't as fragile as these so called Scientest would lead us to believe. Global warming is a good example that we have later learned was a scam.

InLondon, I understand about your desire to honor your grandfather - that's great. But today's coal industry is a far cry from the mine industry your grandfather knew, though companies based out of state were very common even back then. But now, foreign-based megacompanies with management which knows next to nothing about the way of life and the needs of the people of Kentucky (and WVA, and elsewhere in the Appalachian coalfields) run things under a variety of names - name-switching to avoid regulation - while leaving trashed mountains and water behind them, and out-of-work former miners. Look up Essar Energy, based in India, and take a look at all the various names under which they conduct mountaintop removal.

The argument that flattened mountains provide needed flat land for development is an extremely red herring - less than 5% of such land has been put to any kind of productive use.

It's just not your grandfather's mine anymore...

yeah, science, not oil and coal company ceo's, are the ones making BILLIONS off the backs of the poor.

Just announced: Arch Coal is laying off 750 workers, 600 of whom are in Kentucky. Most of the rest are in West Virginia. Arch Coal's headquarters are in St. Louis, MO.
