Default Wondering if KY is for us...

My husband and I are looking to plant our roots. We have a large family - 4 children, plus I am caregiver for my mom (great cardiac care is necessary) and my challenged aunt. We would need a large house and I REALLY want land. I want the horses and chickens and vegetable gardens and fruit trees.

Safety, great schools, non-congested roads, easy access to grocery and hospitals (within 20 mins of the hospital) are important. How is the cost of living? (House costs, gas and electric, property taxes, additional state taxes such as on cars or dining out) Weather? (Long winters? Hot and humid summers?)

Right now we have a 3 br house on 1/3 of an acre and our property taxes are roughly $5K plus we get NYS taxes tacked on to a lot of things and groceries are quite expensive. Please tell me we can do better there.

An online friend posted pictures of her house in Madisonville and said she swears by that town...would never leave it. I want to see if others agree and if there are other places you can recommend.

Thanks!

C'mon down !
Theres lots areas in KY that would fit your requirements as posted.
You will have to do a little more research and talk to realtors to specifically narrow it down to an area you might want to invest in, long-term.
I would suggest researching the areas around Louisville, Frankfort, Bowling Green, Lexington and Fort Knox for a quick start. The thing thats great about KY, there are all those amenities you require in our cities, but 1/2 hour away from the cities, you are in beautiful rural countrysides.
I'm a northerner and would never, ever go back to the North East after living in KY

DITTO!! We're from LI, NY and found Paris, KY to be heaven!! No traffic, close proximity to everything, and 21+ acres, and a 3200+ sq. ft. home equals <$1500 taxes!

Louisville is filled with top-notch hospitals, specialists and medical centers. If you lived in Oldham County (excellent school system), you would have access to wonderful hospitals and doctors within 15 minutes of your home. You would be less than 20 minutes from Costco, Lowes, Home Depot, The Summit shopping center The Summit Louisville - Home - the big malls are about 10 minutes further along with Trader Joe's.

In Oldham County you would be surrounded by farms, farm stores, farm stands, access fo local organic produce, meat, poultry, bison and honey. You'd be close to one of my favorite historic towns - La Grange (affordable housing) Photo Gallery . We were there last night with friends for dinner (one-Nineteen Main - deliciouls fresh food), there was an outdoor concert, wonderful shops open - we sat on a bench and watched the train that goes down the middle of the street and ate an ice-cream cone....kids love that town - lots of special events for the family throughout the year. Lots of beautiful homes, simple farm houses, estates, inexpensive to luxurious.

Visiting this area would give you a great perspective of what it is like to live in aplace with a semi-rural feeling but be close to wonderful city amenities (lots of fun things to do with the family) in Louisville.

Thank you everyone! I just looked up Paris, KY and found a listing in Sauquoit instead for some reason. I was shocked to see the house was listed for $329K or so and taxes were over $17K. Is that normal for that area?

$17K is pretty outrageous - how much property?

Oh. Well that explains it. Note to self...don't do quick research when rushing to get dinner ready. Yep...it was NY. LOL

I have lived in four other states, and would not leave Kentucky for anything. Love it here.
(Although in January when the deep freeze hits I might lust a bit for tropical bliss like Hawaii)
If you are coming from New York, you will be shocked about how low taxes are.
