Officials seek millions in compensation from makers of ‘hillbilly heroin’

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Kentucky officials on Thursday sued the manufacturer of OxyContin, the prescription painkiller dubbed "hillbilly heroin," because of widespread abuse in Appalachia.

A lawsuit filed by Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo and Pike County officials demands millions in compensation from drug maker Purdue Pharma.

"Make no mistake about it — this is war," said Gary C. Johnson, the county's outside counsel who is handling the case.

The lawsuit seeks reimbursement for costs incurred in drug abuse programs, law enforcement and prescription payments through Medicaid and the Kentucky Pharmaceutical Assistance program.

Yeah, lets go ahead and blame the maker of a pain killer made to help people get relief of severe pain. Lets not make people be responsible for their own actions. Oh and above all, lets cost the makers of the drug some money so they can make the price of their medicine even higher in price than it is already.

I hope the makers of Oxycontin win. And I hope when they win, they will make the idiot who filed this lawsuit back up and pay for every cent they had to spend out defending themselves.

The lawsuit is good for a chuckle, what an out right joke this is. When this is all settled just go ahead and sue the dairy farmer next because he sells milk.

Isn't this like the people suing McD's for making them fat?

Actually the issue is whether the drug company actively downplayed the dangers of the medication and mislead doctors and patients about the addictive risk, despite having information to that effect. In other words, did the company lie about the risks of the drug?
