Opinions and/or Advice Please
I've booked a flight to Louisville for November 2nd and will spend five days exploring various cities throughout Kentucky, in hopes of finding my new home.
The towns or cities that I've chosen were based on size, amenities, location to a larger town (have to work) and also on some of the opinions on this forum. I am aware that some of these cities do not have what the bigger ones do but they all have everything I need or are close enough to a larger city.
The places I've chosen to visit are Berea, Paris, Danville, Somerset, London, Lancaster, Mt. Vernon, Hodgenville, Elizabethtown, Glasgow and Versailles.
I'd like input on the pros and cons of each of these places. Don't say there's nothing to do because there is for me. All my interests can be done in any of these cities. I do not want to be in a bigger city and, if possible, hope I don't have to travel to one for a job. That may be necessary so I've taken that into consideration in some of my choices.
I plan to rent until I can get established in a good job and then will buy a small home. Just need enough room for myself and my two small dogs. That's another concern -- must be in a town receptive to dogs and that is safe for a woman living alone. Would be great to have neighbors to keep an eye out for me.
One more thing, as I am from Green Bay, I would like to have the capability to get all the Packers games on TV. They are 5-1 this year --Go Pack!!!
Thanks in advance for everybody's help. It will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I am new to Lexington so I don't know too much, but I do have family in Danville and my grandmother was born in Somerset in 1907. Let me just get the ball rolling for you.
I love Danville! As we drive through there I always think it is "Mayberry". I have several relatives living there, all in lovely homes. I wouldn't recommend that you live in Danville and commute to Lexington. However, there should be plenty of jobs in Danville.
I've driven through Versailles several times. It is beautiful and considered where the people who "love horses" live.
I've visited Berea (barely remember, but had a good impression). I always hear great things ...

Thanks for the response!!!
After doing more research, I'm leaning toword eliminating Sommerset from my list of places because the crime rate is somewhat high. That's something that's important to me as I'll be living alone.
The more I read about Danville and Berea, the better they sound.

Fellow Packer fan here. I don't know if Insight Communications offers a Packer channel or not, but certainly satellites do and satellite dishes on homes are almost as common as windows. So come on Madam/Mr. Cheesehead, hook up your dish with Direct or Dish, and let's celebrate another Superbowl championship together.
Btw.. If 15-30 minute commute works, there are some great housing opportunities in the HOT area of Kentucky. That is Henry, Oldham, & Trimble Counties.

If by some rare chance the Packers would make the Super Bowl, you'll have to come to Green Bay and be a part of it. When they won the last one ten years ago, they had a parade through town the day after and the streets were lined with people. One thing I always remember from that day was Reggie White sitting in the bus looking out with a look of pure joy on his face.

There is nothing that would please me more than to see B. Farve get one more ring. I am not a big pro sports fan, not even with the Pack, but when it comes to the NFL, just like my beloved Kentucky Wildcats, the Pack is the only team that I will sit in front of a tube and watch kick off to final horn.

Here in Louisville, in the inner ring suburb known as St Matthews, there are two bars right next to each other that are Packers and Vikings bars. Gerstle's is the Vikings haunt and Dutch's is the Packers haunt. The places are usually decked out with fans every Sunday!
The Pack
MySpace.com - Dutchs Tavern - 78 - Male - LOUISVILLE, Kentucky - www.myspace.com/dutchs_tavern
The Vikings
Gerstles Place Bar and Grill
Norsemen Pics
I would highly doubt you could find this anywhere else in KY. Some of the smaller towns you are looking at may have a sports bar or two, but it is going to be majority UofK fans.
Louisville, of course, has literally hundreds of bars and several good sports bars.
I am biased towards the Louisville area, but I would strongly suggest looking at more towns closer to here. You may try La Grange and Crestwood and Bardstown in addition to Elizabethtown.

STX, one of the things that I pride myself on is listening to my clients. While I absolutely agree with your assessment of Gerstles & Dutch's and the rest of the state, banging the drum for Louisville is specifically against her criteria when she said, "I do not want to be in a bigger city..." This is not a slam against you, but rather a point which I feel all Realtors and retail sales people should practice practice practice.

I am not a realtor nor a salesperson....I am only here to help pople discover a nice city and state. I strongly feel she would be much happier in a small town much closer to the state's center of culture and vibrancy...so a town like Bardstown and Elizabthtown or La Grange would be my recommendations for her. All are an easy trip from Louisville for weekend escapades in the city.
