Default Water Quality In Cumberland Lake Area?

Hi Folks,
Planning to relocate to the Cumberland Lake area and just returned from a week visit looking into property. I am amazed that most rural areas have county or city water. Does anyone still drill wells or continue to use older drilled wells? Is the water that bad coming out of the ground in that area? It has me very concerned. My son & I are very spoiled to wonderful well water in western NC and hate the idea of treated water & paying for it to boot. Any comments appreciated.
