My wife and I are considering purchasing some property on Lake Cumberland to live on permanently, but since neither of us is anywhere near retirement, we'll have to continue working. Anyone know of employers hiring in that area? We'd both consider pretty much any type of employment that will pay enough to make it worth our while to make the move. Thanks.

I hope that you have more luck than I did. I emailed the community college in that area for info because I was also interested in the relocation. However, I never even received an answer. Luckily, other areas were more responsive. There really isn't much work in that area based upon my observations.

For employment, you'd likely be looking at Somerset, Monticello, and the Russell Spring/Jamesown areas as the best prospects. There is some light manufacturing in Somerset (including several boat-making companies), a decent sized service industry (HVAC, plumbing, etc.), a hospital, and several schools. Of course, tourism also is a big industry in that area, but only during warmer months of the year. That said, I think you'll find competition for jobs to be rather stiff because most of the adjoining counties have depressed, agriculture-based economies whose residents turn to these same communities to find work. It's beautiful country, though, so I can't blame you for wanting to live there.

Unless you've got a plan for parting the Ohio Navy with their money (either directly or indirectly), not much.

Didn't there used to be a Fruit-of-the-Loom factory in that area? I think it shut down about 5 years ago and employment in that area has taken a real hit since then.

This area has several Houseboat factories. Yes, they build houseboats and large boats at different places in Monticello and Somerset. Then there's TTAI east of Somerset. There's a good size industrial park along Highway 461 near TTAI.
