Thanks for your reply!

Where is Springhouse Estates located? I'd be interested in checking that out. Also, which schools serve that neighborhood?

Do you know the names of any of those subs on the northeastern side of LaGrange that you refer to? I've heard not-so-great things about LaGrange Elementary though and that is one of my concerns about living in LaGrange as opposed to Buckner.

Although Madison seems to be a nice, little town, I think it is *too* little for our tastes. We are used to a living in major suburbia...very close to many, many things...great community center, big library, every type of store & mall that you can imagine, tons of restaurants, lots of activities for the kids, etc, etc. I think even living in Oldham County is going to be difficult for me, to be honest. I'm really concerned and apprehensive about it actually!

Someone else on this forum gave me a link to an article about new development coming to Buckner, but after reading it, it appears that it's really a development of new homes and/or condos. I was hoping they'd be adding some more stores and/or restaurants! I'm not used to having to hop on the expressway to go to the grocery store, out to eat or go to Target! Any idea if they will ever add those types of places to the area?

Keep the advice & suggestions coming...I appreciate it and read it all!

Thanks!

That development is called Buckner Crossings, and will contain homes in its initial phase, and major retail in its second phase. The developers have said the retail will be similar to the Summit in NE Jefferson County. The population and wealth already exists in Oldham Co., its just that retailers need the proper infrastructure and developement plan to come into Oldham full force. I would expect all of your major chain retail at Exit 17 in Oldham within the next 5 years at the Bucker exit in this development. I believe the development shpuld break ground on homes soon if it hasn't already, but you may want to contact the Oldham Chamber of Commerce to figure that out. Oldham is one of the fastest growing counties in the state as it continues to serve as Louisville's upscale bedroom community while still retaining a rural charm.

Can't go wrong with Oldham Co. I live very close to PeeWee Valley. It is a very nice area.

to OLIVER30; Why not give Madison another try? You'll find it a lot more convenient than ugly little old Buckner. They have a great many more shopping options than Oldham county does, and Madison is a good deal bigger than any of the towns there. I would never choose a blot like Buckner, over a modern yet historical gem of a small city, such as Madison,In. More shopping, better schools, higher rated medical facilities, a larger population, and more real estate options await you in Madison, than in Ky.

Do you live in Madison? Have you lived in Kentucky? Just wondering from what perspective you're viewing this situation.

More shopping options? The biggest stores I saw were Walmart & JcPenney (if you call that big) and, in my opinion, neither are very great. While I've heard favorable things about Madison's Catholic school, I've also heard not-so-great things about Madison's public schools. Also, as far as the real estate options, when we looked around the area with a realtor, we hardly saw anything that interested us at all.

I do appreciate your feedback and I do realize that everyone's opinion is different. However, I don't think anyone is going to change my mind about living in Madison. Just not for me.

There is a huge difference between Madison, IN and Oldham County KY. Oldham is a suburban and semi-rural bedroom community to a major metro area--the 16th largest city and 42nd largest metropolitan statistical area in Louisville. why are you so intent on looking at Buckner alone? Are you judging it simply based on its semi-rural looking interstate interchange? (which will only look that way for a couple more years before major home and retail goes in that area). The Louisville exurbs in Oldham are substantially larger and more upscale than anything around Madison, IN. By living in Oldham, Oliver will find much more upscale subdivisions and all the major shopping amenities of a large city while living out in the "peace in quiet."

Madison, while a nice quaint little town, is EXTREMELY isolated and reliant on itself, even though it does not have all the amenities of a larger city nearby. even Lagrange has the same shopping amenities as Madison. what Oliver will get living anywhere in Oldham is being within 10 minutes or so of the 265 and 71 interchange where there is all major chain retail, restaurants, etc. Oliver will get all these amenities while living in a quieter area with very high growth and property values but still having big city amenities right next door. You just cant get that in Madison, which is ultimately reliant on Louisville and Cincinnati for any shopping, fine dining, and cultural amenities (Broadway shows, concerts, etc).

To OLIVER30: Yes, with the exception of a few periods of work in other states, I have lived-and still do- in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, for most of my forty-plus(BIG PLUS) years. I am familiar with those areas, of which I speak. While I have never lived in Madison, I have worked extensively in that vicinity. It seems a most pleasant and intelligently developed place to me. I hope things will work out well for you- just please be very careful about whose posts you put faith in. Some posters here are probably not at all what they depict themselves to be. Most, I believe, are honest, decent folks trying to lend a hand.

We live in Springhouse Estates. Lot's of kids, all ages. You should find a nice home (4 bedroom, 2000+ sq ft) for 200-225K. My youngest went to La Grange Elementary for only half a year. It was fine. OCHS is the oldest of the three schools, however there are remodels and upgrades scheduled for this year. My son has been very happy there. They have a dress code, which works for me. I don't feel North Oldham is any better than South or OC, it's just newer.

I drive into Louisville every day. I can get to I-71 in a couple of minutes. North Oldham is farther away from I-71 and will add to the commute. The nicer homes in Crestwood (South Oldham) seem more expensive.

Hey - Bet you know my very best friend in the whole wide world!!! She is a real gem - and has two little kids - and home schools. She usually has the whole street in her front yard - and you can find her dh outside all summer working on the lawn.

I love the neighborhood myself. If I could pick - other than Bardstown - I would probably land there.

Nice to meet a 'neighbor'!

Default Just moved to Buckner!

First, I found this site while trying to find a gymnastics place in Oldham county for my children... boy, do I wish I had known about this FOUR months ago! All of you are so helpful and your information has been amazing. To Oliver 30: We relocated here from Milwaukee. We had been told Oldham Co was the best for schools. We blindly came on a 7 day house hunting trip and purchased a home in the Buckner area on our last day here. I am still new, but I can offer my perspective on things. Our children in K5 & 2nd grade are at Buckner Elementary. We can only say great things at this point. Keep in mind, most schools here combine K&1st and 2&3 grade into one class. This was totally new to us. Let me know if you have more questions about that. We live in Grand Villa. I would also suggest the following subdivisions: Darby Pointe, Kamer Place, Stonefield Trace and Heather Green. The last one is very new, but they do have many "spec" homes for sale. Use semonin.com for a real estate search engine. Very helpful. I can honestly tell you I feel like I know something about most every area of Oldham County due to our week here. I can try to answer any questions. We do have a LaGrange address, but basically, we live in Buckner. I don't understand the postal system. We liked Crestwood too. Also, we liked Prospect. Please let me know if I can help. We were blessed with the outcome of our choices, but having someone to assist with our move, would have been great! Good Luck!
