I am finally doing my western Ky/Southern Ill road-trip and will be spending the night in or near Paducah.

I am thinking of staying a cheap hotel near downtown, the Deluxe Inn, but have a question about the neighborhood, how safe it is to walk in.

I like to walk around to explore the towns/cities I stay at, and am wanting to walk downtown to & from this hotel. Is this a fairly safe are to walk in on the early morning hours, or early evening, after dark?

The hotel looks to be on Broadway, btw 12th and 13th, sort of south/west of downtown, near some railroad yards or shops...I know its a bit out of downtown, but I do quite a bit of walking so the distance isnt an issue....just wanting to be sure I wont be accosted or hassled...

Sketchy but I wouldnt say dangerous. That said you will be the only "normal person" walking that area at night, so I'd be careful. A bike would be very helpful. The area you are staying in is a light industrial "urban renewed" away area that I would say is similar to the 9th st corridor in Louisville but much safer since there are not high density housing projects nearby. Still, I would use common sense in that area at night. If I remember the hotel, its sort of a sketchy outdoor motel kind of place, and I think it may be the type of area that has prostitutes, or else it was a decade ago. There is a great, revived arts district centered to the NE at 7th and Madison.

Too bad you weren't there this weekend. 80,000 pounds of barbecue was cooked up and sold at the Barbecue on the River.
I have a niece that has a consignment clothing shop not too far from your hotel but on Kentucky Ave. Don't think you'll have any trouble. Make sure to make it down to the riverfront and check out the shops, and restaurants.

Paducah has really cleaned up their riverfront. I remember the "dumpy days." I was there last year for business and was pleasantly surprised. It is a nice area.

It looks to be an easy walk to the river from that hotel, so sure this will work for me!

My goal there is to check out that quilt museum and maybe stroll around Lower Town...but I see they also have some floodwall murals. Im a big fan of those (we have some up in the Ohio River towns near me...Portsmouth and Covington).

Back to Paducah....say, any good recs for a breakfast place, that opens early??? I'm looking for sort of a diner or no-frills place that the locals like to go to, thats not Waffle House or a chain.....

Dayton,

I loved this place:

Kirchhoff's Bakery and Deli

Kind of more of a lunch spot, but I remember them having some scones muffins, and a few breakfast options.

I work in Paducah.

There is no way I would stay at Deluxe Inn. It's just too run down and ghetto looking. I think it's one of those notels that offers monthly rates if that tells you anything.

There are a few B&B's downtown but I can't remember the names.

Peter1948 is right: there are some sketchy characters walking around downtown at night. This is probably because Jackson House and Irvin Cobb, two of the tallest buildings in downtown Paducah, are low income housing. Lots of people who live there have mental illness or are just shady characters. That being said, downtown is not really that dangerous.

Definitely not in walking distance but take a trip to Metropolis, Ill., some day and check out the statue of Superman.
Metropolis worked hard and, since they are the only "Metropolis" in the United States, they "adopted" Superman and became his home. There is also a bronze statue of Lois Lane. OFFICIAL City of Metropolis Tourism Website : Home of Superman!
If you feel lucky you can check out the casino riverboat too! My wife and I used to go once or twice a year and just take $25 each with us. When it was gone we came home. Never spent a whole lotta time on the boat! lol

The Deluxe Inn was originally a Travelodge built in the 1960's. It's been closed and reopened under different names, numerous times in the last 40 years or so. There's several of these "motel" type structures around the city proper. Once they were all either a Holiday Inn, Ramada, Travelodge, etc.
When I-24 was built in the late 1970's, all the major chains built new hotels out along the interstate. The old ones went into disrepair, and although attempts have been made to revitalize them, they invariably end up as a place where the homeless scrape together some money occasionally for a bed and a shower.

I wouldn't stay at one of them. If you can find a car in the parking lot less than 20 years old, and without extensive body damage, you're lucky. There is heresy of drug dealing and prostitution at these places. Whether that's valid or not I don't know.

There was a nice large riverfront hotel built in the 70's, but the ownership ran into financial issues and subsequent disrepair of the hotel. The city took over the property and demolished it a couple of years ago. There's talk of a new hotel to replace it, but no deal has been struck so far.

Sadly, in Paducah, the only reputable hotels are going to be located at the intersection of I-24 and US 60. And there's an abundance of them.

Believe it or not, I stayed in a motel like the one DaytonSux is staying in, although it was years ago and I recall it being a Ramada or Travelodge.

I do recall the motel that Dayton is talking about. Being that I feel I know Dayton fairly well from these forums as sort of an "urban pioneer" like myself, I think he will be ok staying there. That said, I do recall some homeless types walking around that area, but it is nothing like say, inner city Dayton where the OP lives now.

Dayton, if you havent been, please post some pics here and let us know what you found.
