I do know that there are always mechanic jobs advertised all over the state, so I just imagine that specializing in being a deisel mechanic would be a huge plus, and way less competition for that job. Eastern Kentucky has a whole lot of coal industry using trucking... so I think that job would be needed, but don't know specifics... Hope someone else can help you out more.

Thank you both for your replies. It is encouraging to know that their is more than likely a demand for diesel mechanics. If there is a demand for good diesel mechanics, then hopefully there is a demand for good diesel mechanic instructors. Do you have any insight particulary into job demand for instructors? What kind of education system is in place in Kentucky concerning the diesel mechanic field? I have noticed that the state community colleges have vo-tech schools, but are there any other establishments that teach this field?

I think training would be handled primarily through vocational or technical schools. It's also possible that companies with large fleets of diesel vehicles may have their own mechanic training programs that would require instructors.

Super Service and PTL come to mind as Kentucky based trucking companies with large fleets. There's also Pegasus in Louisville. Florence and Corbin see alot of truck traffic. Diesel certified tech, he oughta be able to write his own ticket.

Thank you coyote for your response and information. Yes, he is certified, he has his associates degree, plus he is certified in just about everything else out there. Now I just need to figure out how much less of a salary he can take compared to here.

Check out Republic Diesel
They are in Lex and Louisville. A lot of dealers want certified diesel techs for the newer diesel pickups too.
