The congressional district that emcompasses Eastern KY has the worst life expectancy in the country. Entire US. It's because of the ignorance of the people. Rampant smoking, alcoholism, ignorance regarding medical care, coal all over the place damanging lungs but the fools still defend the industry to the death, and obesity. Oh, and widespread narcotic use.

Clueless Kentuckians will defend the area mainly by saying "Other places are worse. Why don't people talk about them?" Well they do. I've heard about Watts, Chicago, the Indian reservations, etc etc. But Eastern KY is just as bad as those areas.

All that posts shows is you are the exception rather than the norm.

Excuse me? You "haters" are so annoying. Good grief, go build an igloo or something.

I grew up in Harlan county.

I went back a few weeks ago.

No cell service with Verizon. Cable television is nothing but envangelized and local news (WYMT).
Water has to be purified from a stream because there is no running water to that area of the county. Even purified, one walks out to the stream to smell the feces and urine that are dumped in it from straightpiping and is disgusted. One tries to use the internet to contact the outside world and it fails, dial up slower than any dial up I've ever used at a premium price of 70$/mo through the only company to offer it in the area.

Contact to the outside world is minimal. The education system is ****, very few kids could even read upon graduating high school. Luckily I got out and went to a real school where they don't tell you that God created the dinosaurs as a test of faith for mankind.

The nearest McDonalds was an hour away, yet obesity was worse than anywhere I'd ever seen because the general diet consisted of fried, unfresh meat.

We had to drive to London to find a shoestore that offered shoes that fit me (hour away for 4E width shoes)

This was in 00.

It's sad that even the most trivial of tasks takes hours, if not days in some cases. The place feels more dangerous than Detroit at midnight. I wouldn't walk down my old hollow at night, with fear of getting attacked by some meth-crazed freak for what little money a person could have in their wallet in that place. Home invasions were more common there than in the south side of Chicago, which I've seen years in. Law enforcement was non-existent and the nearest hospital was 2 hours away, with no emergency services offered at any nearby clinic or other facility.

People live in filth and squalor and don't even want it to change. They're proud of being uneducated, poor, and what few people aren't moving out, the rest will stay and die there.

Most of the girls in my high school class are either dead from some form of overdose or are married with 3+ children. One of them, literally, with her cousin.

You've captured the spirit of eastern kentucky perfectly. Kudos.

I dare you to do a search for Harlan County Kentucky forums and when you find a message board, copy and paste this exact post.

I've talked the same talk when I've gone back "home" (I refuse to call it that seriously). They all admit they live in a world of ****, but they're proud of it.

Even more sad.

The above nonsense, lies, and hate for East Ky that is spewed from the fingers of UKUKUK and some others so often in this forum is the reason I seldom come to the Ky forum..
